RIP Juan Roldan

Sad news from Argentina...80s Middleweight contender Juan "The Hammer" Roldan has passed away from COvID-19.
He was exciting and a great fighter. In another era he'd been a world champion.

Very sad news. RIP 'El Martillo.'
He was unlucky to get his title shots against such quality opponents as Hagler, Hearns and Nunn.
He was one of the fighters I'd root for in the 80s even if it was mostly merely reading about his fights in Eric Armit's pages in Boxing News.

DEP - watched his fight with Hearns where he went down for the second time at the end of the first round, he banged his fist on the canvas in frustration and then he came back to tag him in the fourth before being took out - a fighter and a half who started boxing after wrestling a bear in a fairground show.

RIP Juan Domingo Roldan
I loved watching this guy, total brawler. He brutalised Frank Fletcher and James Kinchen.
I remember staying up until the wee hours for his shootout with Hearns on ITV. If the stars had time aligned I would have loved to have seen him and Tony Sibson and Nigel Benn lock horns.

RIP Juan "The Hammer" Roldan
The only man who officially scored a knockdown against "Marvelous" Marvin Hagler despite the fact that most ringsiders saw Hagler slipped and Hagler made him pay for it with a 10th round TKO win over Roldan.
Roldan was one of the great uncrowned Argentine fighters who fought Hagler, Hearns and Nunn each for their middleweight title fight, but came up short.

Also they are humans, and sadly, sometimes because of political turmoil, we stop seeing our fellow humans as so. It happens in the US every four years when Demorats hate Republican'ts and Republican'ts hate Demorats.
The normal British person had nothing to do with the Falklands and neither did the normal Argentine...in fact Argentines were actually under a dictatorship at that time and a lot of them abhor the entire thing going on back then, from my talks with some Argentine friends...
And of course, the fact the 1986 World Cup game came so close to that conflict did not help either. But all in all, we are all humans. RIP Hammer!

Exactly.
Argentina is a great country that has great kinship with the UK, they played a great part in both world wars in keeping British people fed with their grain and meat.
In 2002 - everywhere I went in Buenos Aires - there were big massive posters of none other than.... David Beckham!

Shame it never happened. Las Vegas, not Wembley in the 80's, soft ref like Carlos Padilla, fireworks guaranteed.
I'd suspect Sibson would try and box, as he could, but at some stage it's going into trench warfare. Very hard to pick, you can easily make a case for both to win.
Roldan always like a good smile during the preliminaries, which made him even more intimidating.

.....what I said was that I really loved my Argentine fighters and also their great rugby culture and that my views were perhaps much against the mainstream convention where there is a rivalry and some politics involved
I cheer Los Pumas on whenever they play a test match - they're one of one my favourite international sports teams - and I was the very first guy to celebrate that they had beaten The All Blacks in Rugby.

You brought up being 'British' about the reason why you shouldn't like Argentina xyz - and Antonio Martin rightly said whatever happened in 1982 had nothing more to do with you nor the ordinary people of Argentina and certainly not Juan Roldan - he wasn't at Mount Tumbledown and nor were you.
I am British and I love everything about Argentina - I wonder what that makes me.
