Boxing ... PEDs

Forum,

When I saw Canelo v Smith was made ... If I was honest even if I didnt hold Callum Smith in high regard, I would still desperately want him to win because of Canelo’s failed tests in the past.

Obvious question ... if a fighter is caught dabbling with dodgy substances should he be banned for life?

Another question for you ... are people like me wrong holding grudges against fighters who have served bans?

Do you feel the PEDs problem is that bad in boxing ... the authorities will never get a grip of the problem?

Feel free to discuss

Spud, just to clarify, are you only concerned with fighters who have failed tests? What about the ones who haven't failed tests either because they have got away with it or because they know how to play the system to its limit? Plenty of top fighters take PEDs and will never fail tests because they never go over the tolerance limits, what about them? You'll have worked with some of them.

If they've deliberately taken PEDS they should be banned for life.

I remember talking to an MMA guy in the last couple of years who readily admitted he used to take them, infact he said his trainer asked him what he was taking and when he replied "nothing" advised him to start taking steroids so he would be able to compete with all the others (meaning all the other MMA guys are already juiced up).

Funnily enough I mentioned Alverez to him and he was in no doubt those he get caught with steroids in their system know exactly what they are doing.

Jimmy

Agree with you entirely.

I have worked in boxing for 20 years and I would be lieing if I said I never suspected a fighter or 2.

Problem is the law says you cannot name them without unequivocal proof.

I don't think holding grudges is ever worth the effort.

Fighters should definitely not get caught up worrying about who is on what and who isn't. You'll be paranoid before you know it. Concentrate on getting your own body and mind right and be confident you can beat anyone you are matched with regardless.

I can categorically state that that's not true but it's probably the easiest point of view to take and how many that do use justify what they are doing to themselves.

i would agree caught taking peds is carere ending in boxing as you can kill an opponent . but i would really challenge what is performance enhancing drugs, i mean cocaine i dont find helps in sports unless its chatting rubbish at speed or and herb , its epo and all these recovery drugs that are the real cheating drugs

Maybe not everyone, but 70-80% of the top fighters is my conservative estimate.

That's a scary estimate.

When I say PEDS I mean steroids, not dope or coke.

Let me ask this, are top fighters only fighting twice a year now because of the lengthy time they need to come off the juice in order to pass tests nearer fight time, or are they tested out of competition, they need to train for 14 weeks and I'm perhaps being cynical?

There’s an excellent documentary on the 1988 100m final called the 9.79 the race that shocked the World. In that a US athletics coach says he thinks 80-90% of the athletes were on drugs. Ben Johnson was clearly smacked up to his tits on steroids, he was on everything you could be on. But still you get people who swear blind that Carl Lewis and Linford Christie, who were only a meter or two behind Johnson, were clean.

People will believe what they want.

A 6 month ban for a boxer, is NOT a ban.

It's a depressing thought.

Could it be that Christie and Lewis were achieving that clean but without the PEDS Johnson would have been miles behind.

By the way, the MMA guy I mentioned earlier also said that years later he now has all sorts of health issues because of the steroids.

I’m pretty sure Christie and Lewis were both known to be on PEDs too.

thats it butch , the big thing with peds is recovery, people have been brained washed into thinking it means you grow huge which that depense on what you take , because mma you need to train at least 3 disciplines then add weights to that, cant see how you can do that at a top level

British boxing I would say not that many.
Normally it’s in the heavyweight division obviously .. but I just don’t think there is the knowledge on PEDs in MOST boxing gyms anyway plus you can’t get prescriptions for PEDs over here in the same way you can in other counties.

Guys who have crossed over from MMA to boxing probably more likely ... as are fighters who trains at certain gyms in my opinion

Of the higher level British boxers (British title level or above )i would say somewhere around 5 or so I would consider suspect

America a lot more

MMA it was pretty much a given until very recently when they started doing some kind of testing.
