In case Okolie wins the WBO cruiser title against Glowacki on the Joshua/Pulev card, will this be one of the greatest overachievements ever?

In his home country and the betting favourite. No.

Obviously, he is dangerous but having followed much of his career, he still looks amateurish and relies on holding a lot. He tears you down and then punishes you with crazy uncoordinated shots. Glowacki will be a serious test for him.

Former olympian wins a version of the world title in his home country shock.

Obviously not the greatest overachievement, but I agree that Okolie is nothing special.

Good timing... Gassiev and Usyk moved up....titles splintered. feels a bit like one of those WBO title from the mid 90s.. not his fault obviously and I wish him luck as he is a good guy.

He started boxing late so is still improving so its hard to measure it as an overachivement if he wins.


if he beats Briedis in Riga... then that would be impressive and more worthy of an over-achievment tag

tbf, we all go on about how ugly his style is, but he's easily won brit and euro titles, never really even pushed

gavin rees, clinton woods world title wins were more surprising(and much more satisfying lol)

Okolie will smash Glowacki IMO.

Laughable though, that we’ve went from Usyk, Gassiev and Breidis to possibly Okolie.

Agree with you both. Out of that crop you'd think he'd be the one to be wrapped in cotton wool and be given the most time to develop.
He's stepped up time after time, got to respect that

I'm rooting for him to do the business. He's a bloody hard watch though. I like a few beers on fight night but may have to get stuck into the vodka red bulls to get me though Okolie and Hughie Fury on the same bill.

I think that Głowacki is underrated since the Briedis ''fight'' scandal. Whoever wins, it gonna be close, IMO.

All the best to the lad. I'll check the result but there's no way I would sit through an Okolie fight by choice. Cruiserweight is probably my favourite division generally but Okolie is a boring fighter.

Not even remotely close. Okolie has skills and knows how to use what he’s got. As others have pointed out he was an excellent amateur and has a big promoter behind him and plenty TV money. It would be more of a surprise if he didn’t win a world title than if he does.

I put going away to win a World title in higher regard than having such huge backing that you drag a World champ over here or win a vacant title over here.

I’d even say Rocky fielding beating that German is a bigger over achievement. I forget if that was for a genuine world title, I think it was for the WBA but may have it mixed in my head.

Glen Catley ironing out Markus Beyer in front of a load of Germans was another overachievement I remember.

Not good to watch, but very effective and tough to beat.
I’m picking Okolie to smother and octopus his way to a gruelling ugly points win.

You’d fully expect an Olympic medal winner to win a world title in the pro’s, considering there are 4 world titles in each weight class.

Did you expect Tony Jeffries, Fred Evans, Anthony Ogogo, David Price, Joe Joyce to then?

Khan was getting knocked out by Breidis Prescott in 50 seconds, dropped by Willie Limond and almost stopped, dropped by Michael Gomez, Craig Watson, Rashid Drilzane. Fighters with chins that bad I don't expect to win a world title. But Fish Eyes did a good job manufacturing a undeserved shot at home against feather fisted Kotelnik at a weight he'd not fought at.

khan was a unified champ + beat maidana, not bad at all

Compared to the others from the GB squad from 2016 then yes he has done very well i.e. Josh Kelly (European level right now), Joshua Buatsi (European), Joe Cordina (European), Anthony Fowler (British) etc... However the reason he has progressed more quickly is a) the division he is in and b) his style. So a) the cruiserweight division is known to be pretty shallow and as previously highlighted with the likes of Usyk and Gassiev etc moving up the belts have been freed up compared to other divisions. Next b) his style means he is very hard to fight but also means he is very hard to watch. I think that is a reason why he has moved so quickly as domestic level opponents really struggled with his style and that is why he has been fast-tracked more than the likes of Kelly, Buatsi and Cordina. This will be his biggest test by far so I am intrigued to see how he gets on as he has never been in with someone like Glowacki who has so much experience at the top level and will probably be able to overcome his style unlike his other opponents.
