Orbital or Jaw

Whats harder to fight through broken? Dubois, Brook bailed out with broken orbitals, Margarito and Inoue went the distance

Ali, Abraham and Burns lasted with busted jaws, Ortiz and Dickens couldn't continue

Im wary of using the word quit because it suggests the fighters shat the bed but i suppose its irrelevant what we call it, its strange whenever a fighter lasts the course with a broken facial bone they rightly get major kudos yet when they quit they are slandered, if bailing with a broken jaw/eye is that bad then surely going the distance isnt that big a deal or vice versa??

They are slandered in comparison to the ones who fought on. Ali and Ruddock going 12 with broken jaws against hitters Norton and Tyson showed exceptional character.

I listened to Dave Allen's interview on Boxing Social earlier and he was honest in his own experiences of giving up aganst Price but he said a great line about for every Arturo Gatti there is, theres a million regular guys who can't handle that sort of pain even in thr world of boxing

Boxers shouldn't be put in a position to have to 'quit' following such serious injuries. The fight should be stopped by the referee following consultation with the ringside doctor as soon as possible after such an injury becomes apparent. Dubois' eye, like Kell Brook's, was in a state for a prolonged period before the fight ended.

If this isn't feasible, boxing should probably be banned.

Was surprised the ref never called the doc over to inspect Dubois eye, then again it was IJL

A fighter should feel no shame in quitting through a bad injury, however, the bar has been set high by fighters that have fought through bad injuries so fans rightly or wrongly will hold them to that standard.

Not sure about actual pain levels, but I’d imagine having a broken orbital is much worse from a psychological point of view, because you’re probably wondering whether you’ll end up permanently blind if you keep getting hit on it.

Didn’t Ali say afterwards that if he’d known his jaw was broken, he would have pulled out?

Agreed. It was amazing the IJL didn’t get the doc to have a look at it given how bad it was.

I was about to type the exact same thing. A broken jaw can usually be repaired easily in the sport. I think a lot of boxers would rather take their first loss than lose an eye and their career.

Someone makes a great point further up that the ref didn’t consult the doctor.

I’m absolutely certain had it been Joyce with a completely shut eye and 3 or 4 rounds left (probably rounds 8 or 9 that the eye completely shut) then the doctor would be called up and based off of history, likely stopped.

Look at what happened to kell Brooke. He made the smart move bailing out otherwise it would be another 10 minutes of that big oaf pounding his eye. Ref / corner should have pulled him out to save face.

This is why I’m hesitant to slag people off for quitting. Yes the guy quit. Frampton giving it the ‘I’d be carried out’ charade is all well and good but if in your head your like ‘if I don’t quit I never fight again’ then for me it’s not something to slate a guy for.

The number of fighters who lay into a guy for quitting with a broken orbital bone or jaw, but have in the past pulled out of fights because they’ve got ill in the build up. Sometimes it needs calling out.

Yes, you also imagine it would be more painful. I do, anyway.

It's a sport and sport doesn't matter all that much. It's light entertainment like Strictly or Catchphrase or whatever. These twerps who say they'd never quit and be carried out or similar are morons and demonstrate why someone with a brain needs to be there to save them from their own stupidity.

Just take a minute, have a think what it must actually feel like to have your fornicating eyeball bone snapped by an 18 stone man punching you in the face over and over. Thousands and thousands of people watching, your mum and your sister 20 foot away. The pain and the loss of vision and the panic what sets in. Quite simply have to be nuts to carry on. The fact that some notable exceptions and crazy hard cases have successfully gone the distance with those injuries doesn’t mean that you can slag the ones who don’t.

Boxers have enough to deal with as it is, calling them quitters while they’re doing one of the bravest jobs out there is just mean-spirited. Big up Daniel for giving a good fight and entertaining me!

Yup. Very disappointing to hear some of the things said about Dubois, and Brook before that, from people with only a tiny fraction of their bravery.

Had my jaw fractured in pub, theres no way I'd want someone punching on it again that night

I was trying to remember who the boxer was with one of the most painful jaw breaks and then I remembered Arthur Abraham against Edison Miranda, it looked a mess for the 8 rounds of the fight he had to get through with it

I’ve been laughing at this sentence for the last couple of minutes. A neat summary of the events that led to the finish, haha.

The thing is the eye was obviously giving Dubois hell before he wilted, it wasnt as if the jab of Joyce hurt him and made him pack it in, there would have been numerous times he'd have felt like taking a knee before but showed heart to keep going, if he'd taking that knee once or twice then got stopped by the ref, he'd be praised, the fact that he didnt go down goes against him and it looks like a one shot quit job

Ian John Lewis has shown himself repeatedly to be incompetent, especially when a fighters welfare is at risk. He should be moved along.

He’s not the sharpest tool in the box obviously and it’s crazy he keeps getting big fights, no matter how many times he cocks it up.
