Viviane Obenauf, Former Title Challenger, Arrested And Held In Connection With Husband's Death

Viviane Obenauf spent her boxing career facing the best competition in her weight division, though is now in for the legal fight of her life.

The former two-division challenger was arrested and remains in custody of Swiss police as part of an ongoing investigation surrounding the death of her 61-year old husband, who is only identified as “Thomas” due to Swiss protection law. In a shocking development first reported by the Daily Sun, Obenauf’s husband was found dead earlier this fall as the result of “massive injuries due to blunt instrument” according to a police report, a copy of which has been obtained by BS.com.

Obeneauf—who was arrested earlier in the week—remains the prime suspect, with suggestions of having beaten her husband to death in their apartment in Interlaken, Sweden.

Swiss authorities have searched both their apartment and a gym owned by Obenauf, 34, who was born in Brazil before moving to Switzerland.

The stunning news comes more than a year after Obenauf called it a career following a 10-round loss to England’s Terri Harper last November in Manchester, England.

Obenauf—who once represented her native Brazil in the Olympics as a gymnast—retired with a record of 14-6 (9KOs) before marrying Thomas this past January in Switzerland. Her post-fight career included a stint in the food and beverage industry before opening her own gym.

Obenauf’s husband owned a restaurant, Des Aples in Interlaken which has remained closed since his death.

A published report from Blick—a Swiss newspaper—revealed that Obenauf has been arrested once before as well as being involved in another domestic dispute. The former contender was apprehended in a London nightclub after punching a male patron in retaliation to allegedly being groped during what was her 30th birthday celebration in October 2016. Obenauf was eventually released.

The same publication also quoted an ex-boyfriend of Obenauf whom alleges that the former boxer has a history of violence. The ex-boyfriend—a weightlifter at the time they were dating—claims that a drunken dispute between the two resulted in his being punched four or five times and his slapping her, though failing to specify or confirm the order of events.

Efforts to have Obenauf arrested and convicted at the time ended shortly after the passing of her mother.

During her career, Obenauf fought a who’s who in the junior lightweight and lightweight divisions. Her biggest achievement came in August 2018 when she scored a stunning 4th round knockout of 2012 Olympian and then-unbeaten Natasha Jonas, who has since emerged a top 130-pound contender. The feat came after suffering losses to Katie Taylor—at the time in her second pro fight and before becoming lightweight queen—and Ewa Brodnicka before the Polish boxer would become a world champion.

Obenauf came up short in a December 2018 title bid versus still-reigning IBF 130-pound titlist Maiva Hamadouche, as well as bouts with Harper and Chantelle Cameron with the IBO title at stake on both occasions.

Boxer who fought Katie Taylor 'murdered husband in blood-soaked baseball bat attack'

Viviane Obenauf, who squared off with Katie Taylor in 2016, was arrested after being accused of murdering her husband by beating him with a baseball bat last October

A former professional women's boxer who once fought boxing sensation Katie Taylor murdered her rich husband in a bloody baseball bat attack, it has been alleged.

Viviane Obenauf, 35, is accused of hitting her husband, a Swiss restauranteur over the head 19 times with the bat in 2020.

She has been in investigative custody since November 2020.

But new evidence has emerged after prosecutors presented evidence to stop the three-time world title challenger from being allowed bail.

The alleged attack resulted in her husband's blood on Obenauf's shoes.

Years earlier she had battled Katie Taylor on the undercard of Anthony Joshua's bout with Eric Molina in 2016.

Obenauf was born in the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, where she played football and was an Olympic gymnast before turning to boxing at the age of 18.

She started working in the gastronomy industry in Switzerland after retiring from the sport and then later opened her own gym.

Obenauf had only married her husband in January 2020, about 10 months prior to the incident. She has been in custody ever since the victim died from a "sustained violent assault".

Now, over a year after the act, the court in Interlaken has revealed several pieces of incriminating evidence that might place the former boxer behind bars for over 10 years.

According to Swiss newspaper Aargauer Zeitung, Obenauf was the only one to have a spare key to her husband's apartment, which is incriminating because there were no break-ins disclosed by the investigators.

Also, despite claiming she was watching films at her own home on the evening of the crime, her mechanic testified that he saw her red Chevrolet Camaro in Interlaken on 18th October 2020, which he had repaired on several occasions and thus recognised, revealing it was the only similar car in the region.

Her son Calvin revealed that the baseball bat found covered in blood next to Thomas F.'s body belonged to his mother, and Thomas F.'s wedding ring was on the ground, lying next to his corpse.

Forensic scientists found Obenauf's DNA on the victim's mobile phone, which had been smashed after the attack, and DNA was also found on his tracksuit top, which they found in a waste container.

They also detected traces of blood from the victim on Obenauf's shoes.

They say he was hit by the accused 19 times in the head and even more times all over his body with the baseball bat, indicating that the act was committed "with emotion".

Obenauf has denied all the charges and demanded she be released from investigative custody, but this was rejected because of the risk that she will flee to Brazil and then vanish, as there is no extradition treaty with Switzerland.

As a result, the court decided that she will remain in custody until the public prosecutor decides to file charges against her.

If she is found guilty of the killing, the former boxer faces over 10 years behind bars.

So basically she married a guy for his money, and then killed him when she wasn't happy.

Think before you act people.
