NOEL” Blue Gum” Mathews was a good welterweight who boxed in the 1950’s and 60’s. He was a southpaw who defeated Americo Agostini and Buster Weir but lost to Johnny Grady. He had 12 - 7 record. Bill Mordey got his Nick name “ Blue Gum” from Mathews. Noel was a drinker at the Local Inn at West Ryde in the 1960’s. The bouncer there was former middleweight Kelly Hanley who had boxed Reg Hayes. I was there when Kelly and Blue Gum punched it out in 1967 outside the Local Inn. Kelly came out the winner that night
