He’s signed Hiroto Kyoguchi (2 weight world champ who fights at Light Flyweight) with the intent of staging a show in Japan in the spring.

Interestingly Kyoguchi is part of Canelo’s team so looks like will be gunning to do more and more with Team Canelo.

If I were a fight promoter I'd do everything I could to get into Japan. Tokyo Dome, Pride FC style.

Yeah - fight sports (MMA, boxing and even pro wrestling) have been massive over there.

Pride FC was amazing.

Always seemed a very closed shop and a tight ship, so if he gets a licence to stage shows over there, well done him!

I’d imagine this will be similar in size to Matchroom Italy. Reasonably small shows just to dip his toe to start off with rather than what he tried to get going in America.

Remember when he did Matt Macklin vs Heyland in Dublin. The aim there was do a show in a small venue, then set up the big show at the big Dublin arena on the third fight. Tap into the Irish market that way slowly slowly. Obviously Macklin being stopped by Heyland threw that to the sh1t pan.

Sounds like a Co-promotional thing with Watanabe*, who would likely be the Japanese promoter (given they are supposed to how Kyoguchi vs Simsri in Spring - barring a WBA mandatory).

Would have to assume Watanabe are no longer tied to TBS, and this could open the door to them heading to DAZN Jpn (who have still never shown a domestic show).



*Hours before Eddie's announcement Masaya Motoishi announced they had a signed contract for Kyoguchi vs Simsri with Watanabe.

Yep, loved some of the lighter Japanese guys over the years. If this gives them more of an opportunity to get on the world stage, then all the better for boxing I say.

Unfortunately not. We have links with Australian and Pacific Islands (excluding Hawai) for guys coming up to Asia Pacific level straps. The other thing is we don't have a lot of sub middle weight men. The fights I go to are mostly between big (and sometimes ginormous) Tongan/Samoan and Maori fellas belting the snot out of each other.

As some have previously posted, Japan is a bit of a closed circuit, until it gets to titles.

i get were your coming from, but if eddie does start buying up japnese fighters you know they will want to fight them in nz or aus as the crowd is so much better as in lively like the uk and ireland crowd , so that will help your boxing in the long run . i think Tim Tszyu will bring a spotlight light down there i know he is aus an that but still brings talk that way like parker has

I'm not sure if this is an insult or compliment... Yes I watch, and enjoy, boxing from Japan... I like their in ring mentality and the fact they don't milk their prospects for 20 fights *shrugs* their boxing politics is generally less messy and they have a have quite of free fights out there.

Eddie piggy backing on some one sounds like what he did with NKL and Srisaket...

This is great news, a real untapped market is Japanese boxing and full of great boxers that want to fight, I went to Tokyo last year and visited the Teiken gym, it was all business in there, the place just reeked of work ethic.

Japanese boxing and NZ boxing dosent match well, NZ is almost all cruiser and heavys, japanese boxers are mainly flys, bantums, and feathers.
According to boxrec Japan has 5 heavyweights, ZERO cruiser weights, Zero light heavyweights, but 160 super bantums.
Contrastingly, NZ has 30 heavys, 20 cruisers, and zero super bantums...

Good move. On boxrec alot and when scrolling though the schedule Japan seems to a card on everything other night! Must be more shows there than anywhere else in the world.
In fairness Arum has beat him to it and has the 2 biggest names in Japanese boxing at Top Rank
On a side note Tokyo is a great place to get on the beers. Golden Gai and roppongi are a great night out.

Its easier though for fighters at like Minimumweight to step up quicker cause theres only 200 fighters in the world at that weight class.

For some reason that just gave me a wonderful mental image of a miniaturised David Tua slugging away at a grim-looking Japanese bantamweight. How short would a Pacific Islander have to be to get below middleweight, like 4 foot 10?
