Promoter allegedly will stage a terrific ten rounder at welterweight as a chief support to the Scott Harrison vs Victor Polo WBO 126lb title clash on January 28 at the Braehead Arena in Glasgow, Scotland. Current British champ David Barnes (16-0; 9KOs) will be in versus Finnish contender Juho Tolppola (11-1; 6KOs) in a fight of rising prospects. No title will be on the line but the attending fans will be treated to a potential "show-spoiler", as both Barnes and Tolppola already proved their worth on the international stage. Barnes recently stopped James Hare in a defense of the British crown, while Tolppola had an impressive outing in Italy last November, losing a split decision to IBF-Int. champ Michele Orlando.

I haven't. Infact i hadn't even heard of the guy until i seen he was fighting Barnes.

Tolppola is an ex-amateur European medallist. 11 wins over European journeymen and worse. Has that questionable split loss in Italy (all Italian judges, all cards 115-113 but split 2-1 for Orlando)

I wanna see Barnes be more busy this year maybe 4 fights in all, last year he only had 2 which IMO is a bit slack for the stage Barnes career is at. Get this fight over & done with and then try to conquer Europe.

Come on now. Barnes looked great last time out, like he could really compete on the world stage. Lots of optimism. It would be fornicating terrible if they now started to totally protect him while defending a tin pot title like Hatton. What a waste it would be.

Ha ha you got that bit right, Barnes should be having a rematch with Vincent instead of mixing with this type of suspect opposition...another waste of time but at least it will keep him busy which is the main thing i suppose.

I am from Finland and I do belive that TOLPPOLA WILL BEAT BARNES today. I really do belive so.

Here is some info of the Finn:

Juho Tolppola, 23, is a young, but well schooled boxer. He won 135 of his
173 amateur bouts. As an amateur Tolppola beat world-class boxers, like
French World Champion Jerome Thomas. His best achievement was a bronze medal in the European Championships in 2000. Soon after that, at the age of 20, Tolppola turned professional.

The Finn had no trouble winning his 10 first bouts in pro ranks. He scored a shutout decisions over experienced journeyman’s Alvaro Moréno and Leonti Voronchuk. In November 2004 Tolppola travelled to Italy and lost a very close split decision to world ranked Michéle Orlando. The bout proved that Tolppola is mature enough to go 12 tough rounds in high tempo against an good opponent. Tolppola is a sporty young man, who trains conscientious and keeps himself in good shape all the time. As a good athletic Tolppola has never ever a smoked or drunk alcohol. He has his goals in boxing high. Making the welterweight limit won’t be an problem for the young Finn, thought he
took the fight in sort notice. In his latest fight (December 2004) Tolppola weighted only 141¼ Lb.

In the ring Tolppola is usually quite aggressive, but still orderly all round boxer. He has a good hand speed, but he’s not very powerful at welterweight. Most of the Finnish analysts thought that Tolppola did not win over Orlando because the Finn was “too damn brave” and that because of that Tolppola wasn’t able to use all of his boxing skills. Tolppola is very well conditioned boxer, with a good defence and chin. David Barnes – Juho Tolppola –bout will most likely go the 10-round distance, if the Englishman can take everything what Tolppola has to offer.

Unfortenetly I can´t see the fight live. But I can´t wait to hear what happened.

Tolppola is, like I wrote, a very good all round boxer. He´s biggest problem is that he is not very flashy. But I am sure that it will be a tough fight fot Barnes. There is no way that he could win the fight before 10-round. So I am confident that it will also be a "good fight".

Im going to back up my fellow scandinavian, Tolppola wins on points.

How was the fight?

Well, we only got to saw 5-6 (can't quite remember) of the rounds. To be brutally honest Barnes looked in complete control throughout. I quite liked the fin and I would welcome him back to fight some of our prospects, but in reality Barnes was a level or two above.

Very impressed with Barnes last night, I humbally appologise for labelling him one of the worst British champions, he is clearly getting better and better now and I think will make European level at the least now.

Bradley Pryce probably still deserves an opportunity mainly because the devisions' depth is low and I still fondly remember his performance vs Sinclair. However, I do feel sorry for him because I think he is going to get a beating.

It's difficult to say because they only showed, if I remember right, four of the rounds. Not that that might have been a bad thing: the fight looked like a real sleeper, with Barnes looking a class above Tolppola, yet not really making any attempt to stop him. It looked quite like a sparring session at times, with neither fighter really starting the fight. Tolppola was game and I think perhaps his eagerness for the win let him down a little. He looked to stand off a lot and wait to counter-punch, which you can't really do if the guy you're fighting is better at it... IMO he would have been better jumping into Barnes' chest and trying to win every round, ugly or not. Though, perhaps that would have led to him getting stopped in the later rounds...

The good thing is that Tolppola looked in great shape and showed good skills, I think the 'sparring session' with Barnes will actually do him good, all that matters now is that he keeps his hunger after the loss...

Barnes was a level above the Fin but his defence was still shit. Luckily the Lofty from east enders look alike was unable to capitalise on Barne's mistakes.

I think they only showed three rounds? They should cut out the ramblings of McCrory and McGuigan and we might be able to see a bit more. Barnes looked good, his opponent wasn't too bad but Barnes was always in control, he needs to cut out the showboating a bit but overall his handspeed and punching was impressive and he gets better with every fight, i can't wait to see him step up in class and then step back down and win his WBU title.

Tolppola returns to the british scene next week where he fights for the WBU international belt against Michael Jennings

According to one of his team the Finn was sick on the plane over last week, but didn't want to back out. I think Jennings will out work him and beat him easily.
