The British Boxing Board of Control released the following statment on January 3:

"Following the increase in Covid-19 cases in the United Kingdom and the effects such increases has on the NHS and the work of the Board Medical Officers, it has been decided that no tournaments under the jurisdiction of the British Boxing Board of Control will take place in January 2021.

A further review by the Board’s Medical Panel and Stewards will take place later in January in relation to tournaments from February onwards."

We don’t really get any TV cards in the UK in Jan anyway.

Frustrating that boxing is cancelled whilst other sports will still happen.

Without going to political, I do hope other sports follow boxing's lead....I think it's a brave and great call

the statement just refers to tournaments. is that a formal word for fights/cards?

Throw it on the Kovalev card on Jan 30th in Russia.

I dont wish to go political...I think its such the correct decision. There is a requirement for paramedics/ambulances to be on hand in professional shows, as well as doctors on pro and amateur shows. We've all seen how much strain the NHS is under currently....they dont have the staffing to open the nightingale as it is

I’d agree with you if Football and Rugby were both cancelled too.

I don’t know that stats but I would have thought a round of premiership rugby matches would create the same or more strain on the NHS than a pro boxing show.

Same with a round of professional football matches.

It would have been on DAZN here. I can’t see Eddie giving the fight up on Sky here and moving it to Russia and putting it on DAZN.

I’d agree with you if Football and Rugby were both cancelled too.

I don’t know that stats but I would have thought a round of premiership rugby matches would create the same or more strain on the NHS than a pro boxing show.

Same with a round of professional football matches.

Don’t forget that an ambulance on site is a requirement of pro boxing in the U.K.

Although promoters use private ambulance companies, they must have a local hospital notified of the event and on standby to receive them if required. It may be that the Board have been informed that hospitals are not available

I believe there are on average 4 injuries (that require treatment and/or loss of training/match plaaying time) per game in the English premiership rugby.

Yes they need to close also... although not sure if ambulances are needed on site...but yes I think it's time all elite sport (particularly contact sport) closed now.

Remember though it was the premier league and bbboc etc who banned it in March....not the government

Agree with Stu here. At this moment in time there is no spare capacity for ambulances to be sitting at sports events. It’s not what anyone would want but the infection rate is sky rocketing and there are more important things for medical staff’s time just now

Yep - well aware that ambulances need to be on site.

It just annoys me that Rugby Union gets to carry on whilst boxing stops particularly when they’ve had substantial financial support.

As far as I’m aware there were 2 pro shows planned for January. Frustrating that we don’t get them but there’s no sign of other sports closing shop.

Don't underestimate how much influence the gambling industry has on this. Brits are, sadly, a nation of degenerate gamblers. On average approximately £250 is lost to the bookies for every man, woman, and child in the UK each year. For the big sports to get shelved is a decision no Tory wants to make.

I think it applies to professional sports and elite sportsmen and women so darts and pretty much every other sport will continue - except boxing it seems.

Does seem cruel that the literal handful of shows would be cancelled but the premier league (20 games a week or whatever) will carry on.

Especially cruel to Avanesyan who has now relocated to UK for two camps and got nothing to show for it .

Couldn’t Eddie with all his connections have moved it abroad ?
