Shawn Porter Wants Terence Crawford Fight, But Arum Won’t Budge On His $1 Million Offer

"Shawn Porter Wants Terence Crawford Fight, But Arum Won’t Budge On His $1 Million Offer"

Shawn Porter said he wanted the [Crawford] fight, but that he should not be “low-balled,” that the $1 million on offer was just that, a low-ball offer. Word got back to Bob Arum, and recently, in speaking with boxing video site Barbershop Conversations, Arum made it clear he will not be upping his offer.

“I read some place that he felt that I insulted him by only offering him a million dollars,” Arum said in reference to Porter. “I’m old fashioned, I don’t know why a million dollars would be an insult to anybody. He should work a deal with me on upside. I’m not guaranteeing more than a million dollars, I’m just not, not in these times.”

For the record, Shawn Porter's purse for his August outing against Formella was $1.2m.

And Kell Brook was rewarded with a $2m payday for his willingness to engage in last November's mismatch against Terence Crawford.

Thoughts? :-?

My thoughts are wtf?

Some promotional ploy by Arum to honor some contract without any fight acctually ever taking place.

I'd fight anybody on God's Green Earth for 1 Million dollars.

I could never think of it as a lowball offer.

If it was worth 3mm you wouldnt fight for 1mm

Remember porter pays management, promoter and training fees out of that 1mm. Then half goes to uncle sam. Hes only got about 3 years to maximize revenue before retiring

It's worth what somebody will pay you for it.

You know with guys like Floyd Mayweather and others getting multi millions for one fight i would agree this is a low ball offer. I wonder why Arum is getting so cheap these days. This era these athletes the top in there game are getting way more than that.

I would think he's being cheap because Crawford vs Porter ain't exactly gonna set any Box Office records.

The audience figures for several Shawn Porter bouts at welterweight:

• Porter-Formella peaked at 1.225m and averaged 1.077m viewers.

• Porter-Ugas peaked at 2.197m and averaged 2.142m viewers.

• Porter-Spence Jr. generated 300K PPV buys.

• Porter-Thurman peaked at 3.94m and averaged 2.4m viewers.

• Porter-Broner peaked at 3m and averaged 2.33m viewers.

The audience figures and Bud’s purses for several Terence Crawford bouts at welterweight:

• Crawford-Brook peaked at 2.078m and averaged 2.029m viewers (Bud’s purse was $4m).

• Crawford-Kavaliasuskas fight peaked 1.512m viewers and averaged 1.481m viewers (Bud’s purse was $4m).

• Crawford-Khan generated 150K PPV buys (Bud’s purse was $5.5m).

• Crawford-Benavidez peaked at 2.708m and averaged 2.245m viewers (Bud’s purse was $3.625m).

Therefore, Shawn Porter is worth more than $1m to face Terence Crawford, especially when you consider the fact Showtime received $1.2m to face a weak opponent like Sebastian Formella.

And let's not forget that Kell Brook was rewarded with a $2m payday for his willingness to engage in last November's mismatch against Terence Crawford.

"Thurman To Arum: Stop Talking Sh-t! Not My Fault You Can’t Afford Fight For Crawford"

The former WBA/WBC welterweight champion thus took to social media Thursday to trash Terence Crawford’s promoter. Between insults, Thurman contended that he did not ask for $10 million last year to challenge Crawford.

Thurman also stated that he realizes a fight with Crawford would be worth less during the COVID-19 pandemic. He is not, however, willing to take “a discount” to fight the unbeaten WBO welterweight champion.

“F--- Bob Arum! All right?,” Thurman said. “Why you talkin’ sh-t, Bob? Keep your God-damn mouth shut. Keep your God-damn mouth shut, Bob. You want a cheap-ass fight? I’ll punch you in your sh-t for free. How ‘bout that? That’s the only cheap-ass sh-t you’re gonna get out of me. I’ll give you a free lick, boy.”

“Look, man, I’m gonna snap on Bob real quick,” Thurman said. “Bob, you a piece of sh-t. You’re one of the worst f--kin’ promoters in the game. OK? All of your great fighters left yo ass! You yourself always go on about how Boxing is dying, and nobody knows who these guys are anymore. As overpaid as Crawford is along with most other name Boxers are you actually think he's made a profit with him under contract at any point?

Of course he has. Bob had HBO money and now ESPN money. That ESPN money could be less now, but he hasn't lost a dime. Hate to break it to you, Bob's full of shit.

Postol and Khan notwithstanding, promoters are on the risk with ppvs.

marvelous marv wrote: 21 Jan 2021, 01:24 Isn't Porter the mandatory for Crawford? Let it go to purse bids
That’s an interesting situation.

In order for Crawford to receive his customary $4m per bout, the winning purse bid would have to be at least $5.4m, with Porter receiving 25%, which equates to $1.35m.

In order to satisfy the terms of Crawford’s deal, which includes exclusivity with ESPN, Top Rank would have to win the purse bid and ensure Bud is paid according to the terms of his contract.

Crawford’s deal with Top Rank doesn’t expire until October, so Bob Arum may use his considerable influence over the WBO to ensure the purse bid isn’t ordered until after that date, when Terence has become a free agent.

It’s a weird situation, because Bob Arum currently has to pay Crawford at least $4m per bout, but he refuses to pay Porter more than $1m, which means that he’s wanting Shawn to accept a measly 20% purse split in order to make the fight happen.
