I’m considering writing a boxing biography. Anybody on here got any advice?

Choosing who to write about is paramount!

If you are looking for the most sales you will need to write about a household name.

I think there are books about facing Ali and Tyson.

Pick Hatton, Haye, Froch, Joshua or Fury and interview their opponents to see how they felt before, during and after the fight.

Therefore you wouldn't even need permission from these champions.

Saying that if the champions wanted to put in some input too it wouldn't hurt but it would prob cost you!

I would think you could avoid lawsuits and paying royalties by writing about a famous or semi-famous boxer who is long dead. I would check with an appropriate lawyer, first, though.

Yes, dead people (or rather their estate) cannot sue for libel in English law

You don’t have to pay royalties to anyone if it isn’t official. I could write a biography about Trump or Obama tomorrow and there is nothing they could do about it (unless I was libellous).

James McDonnell did a great job with the Magri book. It must be the first book in history where the author has the same name as the man who writes the Foreword (Jim McDonnell).

Chris P. Bacon would be a great read - Australian Olympic wrestler, domestic pro contender, Manc doorman - that would be a cracker! If Jimmy Mac wants to get his notebook out of the drawer then I would buy that book...

Has anyone written a book on Tex Cobb? He was the king of the wisecrack for many years and one of the hardest men ever to fight for the world heavyweight title.

Scott Harrison would certainly be an interesting one, although I think somebody tried to do a book with him recently and it all went a bit pear shaped (seem to remember seeing it on a forum somewhere). I could imagine him outside battering on my door if I wrote something he didn’t like)
