Maxis Hughes Vs Paul Hyland Jr - 19th March

These two will meet on the 19th March to fight for the vacant lightweight British title on a good MTK show. Maxi Hughes is coming off the back of two good wins whilst Hyland is straight in for a title shot after recent inactivity.

Who you got?

I wonder what the total cost is, to pay 14 boxers, hire the venue and TV crew and broadcast live online, all for apparently zero revenue generated. If MTK can do it this way whilst expanding across the globe and also into football, I don't see why Eddie has to charge us for it. Somethings not right somewhere.

Good fight this, both love a scrap, Hyland has looked the more vulnerable though, destroyed in a round by Ritson then down several times against Patera before being stopped, too brave for his own good, Hughes is nails and is in career best form, the win over Carroll and then the other fella last time out, cant remember his name, i think Hughes will finally get his hands on the British here, third time lucky, Hyland the naturally bigger man but ive never seen him try to use his height and reach, Hughes on points

These shows costing 100k + to put on , MTK seem to have a bottomless pot of money ? Would love to see their report / accounts , some impressive accounting going on there !

I don’t get why people are so bothered about how MTK put their shows on. We get decent shows like this without having to pay...

Strange ending but you've gotta say the ref didnt do too much wrong, Hyland got creased by a right hook to the body and looked like he was on way down but didnt actually touch, the ref rightly waved it back on and Hyland obviously in distress thought he was being giving a count and turned away until Hughes clocked him with another right to end it

Hughes was excellent all night I thought, his jab and his movement were spot on, he outjabbed the bigger Hyland and rode out most of his attacks, great upper body movement as well but it was his body punching what won him the fight, he just kept chopping away and several times it was clear Hyland was feeling them, Hyland showing again what a tough bastard he is, his bodywork was probably his best asset tonight as well but it wasnt as effective as Hughes, going into the 8th the writing was the wall, still a bit bizarre to see it end like that but no doubt Hughes was a clear winner

i agree , though i think reff could of been more commanding i think paul was looking for a way out, and it shouldnt take anything from maxi very good win

This is nonsense! It shouldn't have been a count but the ref stopped the fight as if it was, sent Hughes to the corner and then instantly called the fight back on when Hyland had his back turned.

Hughes sprinting across the ring to hit a fighter while he had his back to him didn't sit right with me either.

It was a messy situation all because Hyland didn't just take a knee and take a count. If you are hurt like that from a body shot you have to take a knee. Maxi was pretty fast getting over there and getting that last shot off. Perhaps the ref could have shouted stop boxing before he got the shot off and called the fight off at that point. The corner could have thrown the towel in themselves. Hyland was looking like he had mentally given up from what I was seeing.

The ref incorrectly thought Hyland was down like most of us did, when he realised he never actually touched the canvas he shouts box on, he should've seen what Hughes was about to do and jumped in, Hyland fot his part should've realised he never went down himself and turned back around as soon as ref shouted

He pointed Maxi to the neutral corner. That same second Hyland seen this and turned around, a split second later, the ref carries on the fight.

Maxi literally ran over just to hit a man whilst he wasnt facing him.

Anyone saying ‘protect yourselves at all times’, it doesn’t apply here.

Ref needs to do a better job.

He made a decision in a split second.. and it changed everything. They need to be more clear.

Ref could get a boxer killed like this.

You forget to point out he also clearly said box on.He didnt just carry on without giving the instruction.Should the other lad be listening to the refs instructions and reacting to them?
I always think of Martin Rogan sportingly not hitting Sam sexton in there first fight when he had the right to and his career went in a differnt direction than if hed have won.Danny hasnt had the easiest of careers and probably wasnt ready to let any chance slip.If the ref had have said stop boxing or even stayed silent and not said box on i doubt danny would have tried to have thrown that punch and finish the fight.

I think we can all agree that Hughes was blameless, the ref and Hyland both could've dealt with the situation better but we're talking about 3 seconds here

Box on whilst Hyland was in his way to a neutral corner.

It obviously wasn't clear to Hyland as he had his back to him. Ref should not have let Hughes get that shot in once he realised Hyland hadn't heard him.

Box on whilst Hyland was in his way to a neutral corner.
Yep he said box on.If hed been facing the opponent he could have,Also if your not in a position to defend yourself is a reason for stopping a fight with his back to the other guy probably the best course of action was to stop the fight.Take a look at paul sykes british title fight turns his back literally for a split second ref judges hes not in a position to defend himself and calls it off.

Bad riffing but that not Hughes's prob.

You can be sporting like Rogan but you may well lose the fight.

Hyland should have took a knee. By not doing so Maxi was well within his rights to stick another one into the ribs which he was denied of doing. That would have finished it off anyway which I know he would have preferred.

But he didn't, and the ref quickly realised it wasn't a knock down so said box on very clearly. You can then hear both the ref, and his corner warning him of what was about to happen (Paul, Paul, Paul) but he chose to ignore it because Hyland was in a position where his body was saying f*** that, but his mind was telling him not to quit. Maxi wasn't about to let him off the hook for something he's worked so hard for so took the chance when it presented itself. Hyland would have done the same as would any other champion.

You'll not see any boxers complaining about what he did.....

When his senses have gone and all he wants to do is get a breath the last thing on his mind would be to take a knee especially when the last thing Hyland sees is the ref has pointing Hughes to neutral corner, that was morally wrong by Hughes IMO and if I was hyland I'd get my own back on him in the hotel lobby, sneak up and sock him one right in the eye.
The ref should also face disciplinary action.
