The rumour mill (as per World Boxing News) is strongly suggesting that Crawford’s next opponent will be the injury-prone past-his-prime version of Keith Thurman.

Assuming the Crawford bout occurs during July, then Thurman would have only previously engaged in two fights within the last 4½ years.

One Time’s majority-decision performance against the gatekeeper/competent journeyman, Josesito Lopez, was very lacklustre in nature.

The Lopez win is Keith's only victory within the last 4½ years!

And Thurman also suffered an upset loss against the forty-something iteration of Manny Pacquiao, which was his most recent outing that took place two years ago (based on the likely Crawford fight-date).

Thurman’s dramatic dip in form over the last four years is partially due to inactivity, but primarily because of the sheer extent of his highly-publicised injuries that prevented him from training. It appears that Keith's body is shot to pieces (i.e. elbow, rib, neck, hand etc.).

This will be Crawford’s third big-name past-his-prime welterweight he’s faced within the last four years, with the other two being the mismatches against Amir Khan and Kell Brook.

Thoughts?

Prior to the Terence Crawford bout, Amir Khan had only won one bout at welterweight within the previous four years.

Prior to the Terence Crawford bout, Kell Brook had only won one bout at welterweight within the previous 5½ years.

And if the current rumours are true…

Prior to the Terence Crawford bout, Keith Thurman has only won one bout at welterweight within the previous 4½ years.

Would love to have seen this fight 3 - 4 years ago; not so much now.

If it were to happen, Thurman would be the best fighter Crawford would have faced at 147, which says more about Crawford's 147 career than it does about Thurman.

Crawford UD without breaking too much sweat, which is a shame, because 4 years ago, it would have been hard to call.

It's almost like Crawford is Boxrec stat-padding as, despite their inactivity, these guys were ranked higher on Boxrec than their current ability deserved. He also faced Jeff Horn who was fresh off of a robbery victory over Pacquiao and therefore was ranked at the top of the Boxrec rankings.

tbh i dont really think thurman is any much worse than porter, he of course beat him, and though kweef has only fought last vs pac in 2019, porters only fight since 2019 was vs a c level guy. if kweef came back and beat formella i wouldnt rate him really much higher at all

same type of level imo. ppl talk about spence having beaten superior opponents when they are talking about him beating guys thurman beat himself

I think Porter is a more difficult matchup for Crawford. His octopus in quicksand style would make TCraw work harder for the W.

i dont think his chances of winning are any much better, he is an ugly style, of course

spence gets 'better opposition' props for beating guys thurman already beat, i think this is a good fight for craw

Neither has a legit chance of winning, IMO, but Porter would be a more challenging matchup. That is all.

I was thinking more about styles. I think porter poses a problem style wise and makes it interesting

I have no doubt Crawford beats Thurman

Both have similar accomplishments (Thurman and porter) i agree

Would love to see Pacquiao get the win but seems incredibly unlikely given Pac's age. We can hope.

Crawford will outclass and stop Thurman. who has never possessed enough abilities to win a guy like Crawford.

This would be arguably Crawford's best opponent to date. Thurman isn't perceived the way he once was, but he's still a high profile opponent I'd say.

The thurmanator is a good opponent and a smart fighter. He was very competitive against Pac. If he’s given adequate notice/time to train, it’s a more than decent fight on paper.

Agree. On paper a decent opponent. Thurman brings some intrigue as he’s smart in my opinion however in the ring it could be one sided.

ESPN reports Crawford-Pacquiao is being discussed for June 5.
