I have just noticed on the Sky History Channel at 8 pm and again at 9pm there is a documentary on 18th centuary bare-knuckle Boxing called The Georgian Undergrounf.
I think it was on CH4 last year but I missed it.

Thanks, I would have missed that.
Should be interesting, recently reading up on John L. Sullivan and he preferred the Queensbury rules rather than the old prize fighting rules, he thought it was too much running and time wasting with the prize ring rules.

What a fantastic documentary that was. Got to confess, don't know much at all about the sport back then although had heard of the legendary Tom Cribb.
Seems like it was more popular 200 years ago than now!

I heartily recommend Black Ajax by the guy who wrote the Flashman books, novelised account of Molyneaux - Cribb fights, and The Great Prize Fight by I can't remember who, the story of the first USA vs England 'world' title bout between Sayers and Heenan. Bothe excellent reads.
Enjoyed the documentary, too.

Yes, I enjoyed the documentary to, very well made and presented I thought.
Although I seem to recall that some reports say it was Molyneauxs head that was injured and not his hand in the Cribb fight. I may be wrong there though.

He got beat by Rich Gannon. But it was a hollow victory. Gannon looked like John Merrick after it he got beat so bad.

Gannon (the big white guy) cheated by using a standing choke (UFC, MMA move) and by kneeing him. If it was straight bare-knuckle boxing Gannon would have been even more disfiguired.

The video was quite brutal, those so called mates of Byrd's were right bastards, his eye was shut and he clearly wanted no more of it and yet they were demanding that he carried on because money was riding on it. Then when he gave up they all left him to talk to winner, what shits. Nobody went to see if he was okay, Byrd had to stagger to them.
Fun to watch but their accuracy made the current version of Tyson look like Sugar Ray Leonard.
