David Benavidez-Jose Uzcategui Super Middleweight Clash To Headline Aug. 28 Showtime Telecast

David Benavidez will choose to remain active while the super middleweight division title picture continues to take shape.

On the heels of his dominant showing earlier this year, Phoenix’s Benavidez will next face Jose Uzcategui in a clash of former super middleweight titlists. The bout headlines the Aug. 28th edition of Showtime Championship Boxing from a venue to be determined.

The bout is part of a nine-event schedule which was announced Thursday by Showtime Sports and Premier Boxing Champions (PBC).

Benavidez (24-0, 21 KOs) fought on the network this past March, scoring an 11th round stoppage of Ronald Ellis at Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut. The event was the first for the unbeaten 24-year-old since losing the WBC super middleweight title outside the ring for a second time, missing weight ahead of a 10th round stoppage at Alexis Angulo last August also at Mohegan Sun.

The scale fail prompted a brief discussion among his team—which includes widely respected promoter Sampson Lewkowicz—for the still-growing former titlist to move up to light heavyweight before deciding to remain at the weight. Benavidez further insisted to face a credible contender, with Uzcategui on the short list though ultimately settling for Ellis. Benavidez moved forward with the fight, with the win securing his place as the number-one contender to his twice-held WBC title which is currently in the possession of pound-for-pound king Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

Uzcategui (30-4, 25 KOs) ended a 15-month layoff with an 8th round knockout of Josue Obando on March 26th in Jocotepec, Mexico.

The 30-year-old from Tijuana by way of Bolivia hadn’t previously fought since a 10-round loss to Lionell Thompson in Dec. 2019, two fights after losing his IBF super middleweight titlist to Caleb Plant in Jan. 2019. The defeat to Plant ended a 10-month title reign for Uzcategui which came with an 8th round stoppage of Andre Dirrell in their March 2018 rematch.

A win by Benavidez will keep him on course to enforce his mandatory status, which could potentially lead to a shot at the undisputed championship. Guadalajara’s Alvarez (55-1-2, 37KOs) holds the WBC/WBA titles and is currently in training for a three-belt showdown with WBO titlist Billy Joe Saunders (30-0, 14KOs) which is due to take place May 8th at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The winner will look to pursue a four-belt showdown with Plant (21-0, 12KOs), with Benavidez likely to pursue his title shot thereafter.

Remaining details of the Aug. 28 Showtime telecast—including undercard and location—are expected to be revealed in the coming weeks.

Decent stay-busy fight for Benavidez. He needs to stay active. Benavidez should win this by T/KO. :TU: :box:

This is a very decent fight for Benavidez. He should score a relatively straightforward decision victory.

Jose Uzcategui is a competent gatekeeper/fringe contender calibre opponent.

Hopefully, he can fight again end of the year, that'll be 3 fights in 2021.

The Boxingtalk Interview: Jose Benavidez, Sr.

Ivan Montiel: Showtime announced last week that David Benavidez (pictured) will face Jose Uzcategui in a WBC super middleweight eliminator on August 28th. We are excited to see your son David [the undefeated former WBC super middleweight champion] versus Uzcategui.

Jose Benavidez, Sr. [David's father and trainer]: We are excited. It’s going to be a tough fight man. Uzcategui is a former IBF champion, a really good person and a guy that works very hard. He needs this fight in order to get back on top, and we are getting ready.

IM: That’s right but before we get into it, I would like to congratulate you on David’s win over Ronald Ellis, a late-round TKO win just last month.

JB: Thank you man, Ellis was another great fighter who was hungry. He didn’t want to go down. He knew going in that he needed a win in order to get recognized. But thank God, we emerged victorious. We put a lot of hard work into that training camp. My respect to Ellis. He’s a great fighter, it sure was a tough fight.

IM: I hope Ellis is doing okay because David sure punished him.

JB: Yes, he did, Ellis didn’t want to quit, he came ready. To be honest with you I didn’t think Ellis was going to get stopped, going into that eight round I told David let’s take him out. He was very close but then Ellis recuperated and after that he looked fresh.

IM: David was looking to make a big statement and he made one.

JB: Yes, it’s like any other fight, against Uzcategui we have to work hard. We cannot underestimate him, he’s a very dangerous fighter. We have to make another statement, we have to look impressive in order to get to the next level.

IM: August 28th is the date you are fighting Uzcategui.

JB: August 28th, that’s right. We will be announcing the venue in a few weeks. We are exciting, we have been training, all of these fights are important to us. In order to get bigger fights, we must stay focused, dedicated and continue to shine. If that doesn’t happen big fights will not come.

IM: I am just thinking that Uzcategui has never been KO’d nor TKO’d. Is that your goal, to win by KO or TKO?

JB: The goal is to stop everyone. When you stop everyone, it’s more impressive. Uzcategui has never been stopped. I believe that Uzcategui will train like never before since this could very well be his last big opportunity. I believe that Uzcategui is focused and has something to prove, we also have something to prove. Both Uzcategui and David are going to go for that KO. I think it’s going to be a really good fight.

IM: Both fighters sure are exciting to watch. I also believe it’s going to be pure fireworks.

JB: I’ll tell you, someone is going down due to the style of both fighters. Both fighters go forward so we will see fireworks. This is a good fight for the both of us. Uzcategui struggled in his fight versus Lionell Thompson since Thompson kept moving. Thompson had good legs therefore Uzcategui struggled in that fight. It’s a perfect fight for the both of us due to our styles.

IM: Now before I forget I was listening in on Top Rank Boxing’s most recent press conference and when Edgar Berlanga was asked about David Benavidez, he said that he wouldn’t mind fighting your son in the future.

JB: I recall us talking about Berlanga in our last interview and yes, I think it’s a possible fight that could very well take place. We would love to fight Berlanga. He is looking good, he’s young, hungry, strong and has an impressive record. Berlanga is doing exactly what he’s supposed to be doing. I think within a matter of time it’s a fight that must get made. It’s a fight boxing fans want, and we are ready whenever he’s ready. He’s not ready but he’s working hard, and I am not taking anything away from Berlanga. He is a dangerous fighter, he’s getting bigger and better with experience which is why I think a fight against David would be a good fight for boxing fans.

IM: Now I know that you guys want a big fight versus WBA/WBC champion Canelo Alvarez yet it looks like it might not happen anytime soon. So if you guys can beat Uzcategui in tremendous fashion and Berlanga wins his next fight, a Benavidez-Berlanga should logically be next.

JB: Yes, I don’t worry much about Canelo, everyone wants to fight him. If a fight versus Canelo happens, it happens however we are not chasing him. We are keeping active, in the meantime we have no problem fighting Berlanga, Charlo whomever is put in front of us. We are just working only time will tell what fights happen in the future. Canelo as you know is currently concentrating on Billy Joe Saunders and then Caleb Plant. Maybe after those fights we can talk about it. At the moment, there’s no point in discussing a fight against Canelo. It’s like you just said, it’s not happening for the moment, so we just have to continue staying active, disciplined, working hard and only time will tell. If we continue to look good, I don’t see why not.

IM: I think that eventually you guys will get that Canelo fight because David keeps proving those boxing fans that don’t believe in him wrong.

JB: We must continue to win fights, stay focused, discipline that’s pretty much our plan. We have to show boxing fans where we are at, get better and when that time comes we will be ready.

IM: Has David already begun training camp for Uzcategui?

JB: Yes, we have been in training camp roughly 3 weeks, we are going slowly but surely every week we increase what we have to do.

IM: David fought not too long ago [March], so it looks like he wants to keep busy.

JB: Exactly. That’s our plan to stay active. We don’t want to take a break... PBC, Showtime Network and Al Haymon are doing a very great job keeping David active. We are extremely happy with the entire team and we must continue to stay focused.

IM: Now I know that team Benavidez doesn’t like to talk too much however do you by any chance have a prediction? Any message to send out to Uzcategui?

JB: At the end of the day talk is cheap. You have to show what you have inside that ring. Once again, we have to look impressive. Once again Uzcategui is a very good fighter, a former champion who’s never been stopped but once again we must make a big statement. We must stop him in 6 to 7 rounds in order to look better than Caleb Plant. Plant had a difficult fight against Uzcategui therefore we must look impressive. We don’t want to be criticized like we are not on the same level. We are going to work hard in order to give you guys a good fight. There’s no other way but to stop Uzcategui.

IM: I should also mention that I just realized that you guys have Ecuadorian blood just like my family does. Ecuador supports Benavidez. Mexicans support Benavidez but so does Ecuador.

JB: Shout out to Ecuador. Thanks to all the Ecuadorians their your support. We are very proud to represent Ecuador since David’s mom is from California, however her mom is from Quito, Ecuador. My sons have Mexican and Ecuadorean blood and even Dominican blood due to their grandfather. We are blessed to have all these nationalities. We are proud to represent all these Latin countries. We also appreciate the United States of America which has given us a lot. The United States of America is also in our hearts. We have a little thing of everything bro. (laughs)

IM: I sure am looking forward to this fight on August 28th versus Uzcategui.

JB: We have to represent bro. A shout out to all my Latinos. A shout out to all those warriors not just in Latin American but also in the USA. We Latinos can make something out of ourselves here in the United States of America, we just have to be focused. We are all one, we are here to represent. We must work hard to represent all of these countries man.

IM: Thanks once again, I am sure David will put on a great performance as always. I wish you guys all the best.

JB: Thanks again, we will give it everything so that you guys can enjoy it. Thanks to Boxing talk for your support and every boxing fan out there as well.

David Benavidez vs Jose Uzcategui set for August 28th at Phoenix Suns Arena

David’s brother Jose is expected to appear on the card as well

After fighting all across North America for the last six years, former WBC super middleweight champion David Benavidez will return to his native Phoenix to face fellow former titlist Jose Uzcategui atop an August 28th Showtime card.

Showtime officially announced the venue today; while they made no mention of the undercard, Francisco A. Salazar revealed earlier this month that David’s brother Jose would end a lengthy layoff that day.

Benavidez (24-1, 21 KO) vs. Uzcategui (31-4, 26 KO) would have been a dream fight back in 2018, when Benavidez held the WBC title and Uzcategui had just finished dominating Andre Dirrell for the interim IBF belt. It’s lost a bit of luster these last few years, largely due to Uzcategui’s struggles. “Bolivita” lost his belt to Caleb Plant in his first defense, then lost an upset to decision to Lionell Thompson later that year. He’s since smashed a couple of journeymen in Mexico, but it’s hard to imagine him posing a threat to “El Bandera Roja.”

But at least there’s Jake Paul vs. Tyron Woodley the next day, right?

Press Release | Showtime Tripleheader Announced

Unbeaten two-time world champion David “El Bandera Roja” Benavídez will square off against former champion Jose Uzcategui in a WBC Super Middleweight title eliminator as Benavídez returns to his hometown of Phoenix for the first time in six years in the SHOWTIME main event on Saturday, August 28 in a Premier Boxing Champions event from Footprint Center – home of the Phoenix Suns and Mercury.

The SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast begins at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT and will feature the much-awaited return of longtime contender Jose Benavídez, the older brother of David Benavídez, facing Argentina’s Francisco Emanuel Torres in the 10-round super welterweight co-main event. Kicking off the telecast is undefeated contender Carlos Castro taking on former title challenger Oscar Escandon in a 10-round super bantamweight bout. The Benavídez brothers and Castro hail from Phoenix and have their sights set on impressing their hometown fans.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Sampson Boxing and TGB Promotions, are on sale now and are available for purchase through Ticketmaster.com.

Still just 24-years-old, Benavídez (24-0, 21 KOs) enters this fight having knocked out his last four opponents, including a September 2019 knockout of two-time super middleweight champion Anthony Dirrell. Most recently, he earned stoppage victories over Roamer Alexis Angulo in August 2020 and Ronald Ellis in March of this year. Benavídez is trained by his father José Sr., alongside his brother and former title challenger, José Jr. In 2017, he became the youngest super middleweight champion in boxing history by defeating Ronald Gavril on SHOWTIME at just 20 years old. Representing his native Phoenix, Ariz., Benavídez went from a 15-year-old prodigy sparring with Gennady Golovkin and Peter Quillin, to world title contender with a 10-fight knockout streak from 2015 through 2017, including a highlight-reel knockout of Rogelio Medina with a seven-punch combination that earned him his first title opportunity.

Born in Venezuela and fighting out of Tijuana, Mexico, Uzcategui (31-4, 26 KOs) captured a 168-pound world title in March of 2018 by stopping veteran contender Andre Dirrell after eight rounds. The 30-year-old put himself in position to fight for a title with four-straight stoppage victories from 2015 through 2016, including a win over then-unbeaten Julius Jackson. Since losing the title to unbeaten champion Caleb Plant in January 2019, Uzcategui has rebounded to win three of his last four fights, including knockout wins in 2021 over Jaime Hernandez Lopez and Josue Obando.

The 28-year-old Benavídez (27-1, 18 KOs) is the older brother of main event headliner David and returns to fight in his hometown of Phoenix for the first time in six years. A long-established contender, Benavídez will return to action for the first time since dropping a 147-pound title showdown to Terence Crawford in October 2018. Benavídez had previously earned wins over contenders such as Mauricio Herrera, Francisco Santana and Frank Rojas on his way to that world title opportunity.

A native of boxing-rich Buenos Aires, Argentina, Torres (17-3, 5 KOs) enters this fight the winner of his last nine contests dating back to 2018. The 31-year-old will fight in the U.S. for the third time on August 28, having scored stateside victories over Cleotis Pendarvis in August 2020 and Louis Hernandez in February of this year. Torres most recently won a unanimous decision over Alexi Rivera in June as he prepares for his toughest fight to date against Benavídez.

Castro (26-0, 11 KOs) has climbed the rankings since turning pro in 2012 as he seeks a shot at a super bantamweight championship. The Phoenix-native added two victories in 2020, defeating Jesus Ruiz in February before stopping longtime contender Cesar Juarez in four rounds in July. Castro was coming off a 2019 campaign that saw him score three victories, including 10-round unanimous decision triumphs over former title challenger Genesis Servania and veteran contender Mario Diaz.

A native of Ibague, Colombia, Escandon (26-5, 18 KOs) has faced a slew of top contenders and champions including featherweight champion Gary Russell Jr. and super bantamweight champion Brandon Figueroa, plus hard-hitting contender Tugstsogt Nyambayar. Escandon captured an interim title in 2016 when he knocked out Robinson Castellanos to earn his world title shot against Russell. Most recently, Escandon scored a first-round knockout over previously unbeaten contender Jhack Tepora in December of 2019.

I hope Benavidez is gonna take very serious this fight bc he needs to make some noise. Jose is a tough fighter.

I wonder against who would fight Benavidez next if he wins this fight? I don't see Charlo or Plant fighting him next. Lemieux and Jacobs are ranked below him.

Benavidez: I Want To Be The First Person To Knock Uzcategui Out!

Two-time super middleweight world champion David “El Bandera Roja” Benavidez is hoping to become the first boxer to score a stoppage win over former champion Jose Uzcategui.

The two boxers will collide in a WBC super middleweight title eliminator on Saturday, August 28 in a Showtime televised main event from the Footprint Center in Arizona.

Uzcategui was the IBF's champion at 168-pounds - until he lost the title by way of a twelve round decision to Caleb Plant in 2019.

Benavidez wants to make a statement by closing the show inside the distance.

“I know that I can hurt anybody. I’ve hurt everyone I’ve ever faced. I’m not ignorant though, I know that he has power too. I think if I follow my game plan, I can definitely knock him out. No one has knocked him out, so I’m training hard to be the first person to do that. I go for the stoppage in every fight and I know he’s going to come for the same thing," Benavidez said.

Uzcategui is the obvious underdog, but he's not being overlooked by Benavidez.

"Uzcategui is not an easy fighter. He’s an ex-world champion looking to be champion again, so we’re at a crossroads, and whoever wins knows they have a big fight coming," Benavidez said.

“This is a big opportunity for whoever wins this fight. He’s been in this sport for a long time and has a lot of experience. This is the kind of fight we both need to get to the bigger dogs. I’ll fight whoever I have to in order to get back to the world title. I’m going to earn my opportunity any way it comes.

“We both throw good power shots and we’re very similar fighters. When two bulls go toe-to-toe you’re going to get a war. This is going to be one of the best fights of the year. It’s a guaranteed war."

Big fights in these times may need a solid undercard fight of same weight class imo

It kinda makes sense. but its definatly bold.

Benevidez will train for Uzcate, but will also be training for canelo and probably has been for years (so would charlo, bivol, beterb, ect).
Canelo will be training for plant, but will he tweak anything for benevidez? probably not. So at what notice will canelo agree to this. If plant got injured fight week would he fight benavidez? cause thats a good guy to fight if you havent been getting the apropriate sparring.

Why is the potential of Plant being injured being cited as the only reason for putting Benavidez v Uzcategui on the undercard? Is Canelo invulnerable to injury and Covid infection?
