Next Monday Edwin Valero would have been dead for 11 years due to suicide in prison after the murder of his wife.

This guy had all the hype at the time, a string of 1st round KO’s (a record at the time), 2 weight world champion at super feather & lightweight.

He was a KO artist and a no nonsense fighter, hitting the deck a few times I believe to come back and win by KO.

Looking back his record hasn’t got many big names on it but the boxing fans always ranted and raved about a pac-Valero shoot out.

Let’s not concentrate on the wife issues (beatings/murder)or suicide let’s just appreciate the boxing in this topic.

Could have gone up to 140 and had some cracking fights as that was the big division at the time.

he reminded me a lot of younger pac man.......super aggressive with the southpaw 1-2s, fast and powerful. though he could get pretty sloppy at times and wasnt hard to hit

my guess is that he would get nice results but ultimately too rough around the edges for the very elite fighters. granted who knows, maybe he coulda improved significantly

Valero was in a severe motorcycle accident on February 5, 2001. He suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and a fractured skull. About a year later, he was cleared by doctors in Venezuela to fight and turned professional on July 9, 2002 with a first-round knockout of Eduardo Hernandez.

I’m guessing he would have got found out eventually and ended up with a few KO losses if his defence wasn’t tightened up but his fights would never have been dull

Makes me wonder if this head trauma had anything to do with his mental breakdown at the end
