Cutting weight to make limit

A topic that interests me, I know there are some fighters on this forum so would be interesting to hear what sacrifices they made to get their weight down and how much you rehydrate afterwards.

I know Amir Khan said Canelo was 187lbs by the time he entered the ring against him, yet FMM would be around the same weight come fight night as he was on the scales.

Any other examples of extremes in rehydration?

Loads. Ufc is worse. Water loading is popular now.

Gatti nearly killed Gamache because of it.

There’s a video of UFC fighter Ryan Benoit on YouTube having to be held up for his weigh-in the other night as he was so weak he couldn’t stand!

one example i bring up for perspective on how guys today compare to hws from the past......

joe smith at 6'1 was 190 fight night vs sully barrera, who was 6'2 /187. 6'1/190 is taller and heavier than a lot of past hw champs. jack johnson was called a 'giant' in his day, and he was 6'0.5 and often fought in the 180s

light heavys today wouldve been 'giant' heavys in the past

Allas wrote: 08 May 2021, 04:28 Can’t remember which boxer it was, but he said he literally weighs the weight he fights at for a few hours a year.

Only way to combat ridiculous weight cuts is same day weigh ins (won’t happen) or compulsory rehydration clauses.
A few seconds.

I think it’s just something we have to accept now. And bigger name fighters have the resources to manage the weight better.

Don’t think it’s a giant issue in boxing, it’s a done thing but it’s not really worth cutting massive weight, the negative impacts on punch resistance and stamina out weigh the positives of fighting a smaller opponent. So yes there will be weight cutting but mostly moderate I think.

Ufc has got a lot of its weight cut culture from wrestsling and makes sense there because weight advantage is huge if you get on top of someone...

That said Ultimently I’d like to get rid of it though, could do what one FC has done, weight tests, hydration tests, ect ect , but would have to be open to adjusting the weight classes because otherwise all the cruisers become heavys and some 160s, most 168s and all 175s become cruisers....

That's Amir talking absolute bollocks as usual. Canelo was nowhere near 187, if he was that would have meant he gained 32lb overnight which is frankly impossible. Prob weight 170 ish which is what many LMW rehydrate too.

Danny Jacobs is a big drainer, he's known to enter the ring at 178 plus after weighing in at 160. Amir's mate Kell Brook is another who rehydrates to well over 160 from 147. Jarret Hurd is another big drainer. For some reason LMW and WW seem to be among the biggest re-hydraters, which is interesting.

Bud Crawford entered the ring at 159 after weighing-in- at 140 . Vic Darchinyan weighed-in at 112 at got into the ring at 132. Maidana, I believe, went from 146 to 165 against Mayweather. Those stand out to me.
