it seems like such a f@cking simple punch, but it can make a huge difference, and clearly there is a lot of variance in how well guys use it
just curious as to what you see as the key to having a good jab
and who are the best jabbers today

An ability to use the range makes it good. You gotta feel the distance, work with jab contantly, be able to follow with power punches, be ready for counters.
Fury has a one of the best jabs today, his anthropometrics and fighting style is exactly what's required.
Usyk is at the top here too. They both aren't bangers with Fury, but the jab of both works because they can do it right. They maul their opponents with jabs.
Kovalev at his best was like a swordsman with his jabs and power follow ups.
Basically, every top fighter can operate with it. Crawford, Spence, Golovkin, all of them have it. You can't be a top fighter without it.
However, Canelo seems to be a sorta exception, he doesn't seem too dependant on a jab, but he's very gifted in the other aspects.

Buatsi showed a good jab in his last fight. Quartey had an excellent jab.

Variety in rhythm and use of feints and footwork. See Fury. Buchanan did the same brilliantly

The key to a good jab ... Although it seems obvious, I think putting some weight behind it and shooting it from different angles, so it's hard to get used to.
The best fighters who utilise a good jab are able to find a way to consistently land their jab even against fighters who are adept at taking away their opponents jab via head movement, footwork, being a southpaw, parrying etc.
Michael Watson another great jabber wasn't he.

What makes a particular jab good also depends what you are trying to use it for e.g., closing distance, maintaining distance. setting something up, breaking up the opponent’s rhythm, etc.

George Groves had a fantastic jab. One of the best in recent times.
I like to see a jab with some authority behind it.

I never felt like George Foreman or Lennox Lewis had fast jabs but boy were they effective.
Holmes maybe had the best jab of any heavyweight I think.

Krusher’s greatness depended on his varied jabs. His jabs nearly won him the Canelo fight, and they show the blueprint for a good taller boxer to defeat the current king of boxing.
David Benavides has the jabs to defeat Canelo. He can keep him at distance and set up his varied power shots.
The best boxers can vary the stiffness AND the accuracy of their jabs, in order to set up the opponent at different stages of the fight.
The most underrated or overlooked jab is to the solar plexus area. It is like a pike in a bullfight.
Larry Holmes had the best arsenal of jabs of all time in my book.
Teofimo defeated Lomassiah with his jab.

Enzo Maccarinelli seemed to have a poor jab for a geniune world class fighter.

I've heard the Pfizer one is pretty good and the AZ not so , more side effects with that one .

Actually, Bernard Hopkins did not use his jab much if i remember correctly. Golovkins jab is one of best amongst active boxers. It is not only setup for power punches but GGG can actually do a lot of damage with jab. Jab is basic punch, every serious boxer must have it in his arsenal, but only few can truly master it. And ...if you have bad, slow, lazy jab, and still using it, it will work very badly against you.
