It's common in Continental European rings-a man will raise one hand and turn slightly to indicate he surrenders.

Oh yeah and some Alexis Arguello opponents too....I wouldn't say Claude Noel through..I think he had a genuine injury when he quit versus El Flaco...

In Antwerp Belgium he fought Jan De Bruin.
Robinson was pounding him in the 8th round when all the sudden de Bruin just stopped
fighting, grabbed Robinson's arm and raised it and declared out loudly WINNER !
then he said to Robinson "You'r too good for me".

... but unfortunately incorrect. What happened was that De Bruin raised his own hand in surrender after about 2 minutes of round 8. He felt Robinson had been taking it easy on him after round 5 and therefore didn't want to continue. Robinson said after the fight that he needed the rounds in preparation of the upcoming Turpin fight and for that reason had backed off repeatedly when he had his opponent in trouble.

he must have been reading directly from Sugar Ray Robinson autobiography ?
Because I was going by memory from having read the book just last month,
but later on I'm going to re-read his autobiography and make sure what he said was correct.
(maybe even give direct quotes)

and this is what it reads-word for word-
(page 194)

"Several days later, we took the train to Antwerp for a bout with Jan de Bruin.
in the eighth round, I was pounding him with combinations and he was grunting and groaning.
Suddenly he grabbed my right arm and raised it as he turned to the crown "The winner !" he yelled.
turning to me, he said, "You are too good for me"
he dropped my arm and walked to his corner. He had surrendered.
Nobody had ever done that with me before, nor would anybody ever do it again."

The only problem with an autobiography is that you could put anything you want in there and no one is going to check your work. I understand in Rocky Graziano's AB, he stated that he beat middleweight champ Fred Apostoli (he didn't, he beat a clubfighter named Ted Apostoli - no relation). So I would say, take an AB with a grain of salt.
