Jaime Munguia will be able to move forward with his next scheduled date.
For the second time in as many attempts, an opponent switch is in store for Munguia’s next ring appearance. The unbeaten former junior middleweight titlist will now face Poland’s Kamil Szeremeta, sources familiar with the development have informed BS.com. The bout serves as the new headliner for a June 19 show to air live on DAZN from Don Haskins Center on the campus of University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP).
Szeremeta replaces countryman Maciej Sulecki, who withdrew from the contest for reasons not yet disclosed. ESPN Knockout’s Julius Julianis was the first to report the development. Representatives from Golden Boy Promotions declined comment as the bout has not yet been formally announced.
Tijuana’s Munguia (36-0, 29 KOs) has been out of the ring since a 6th round stoppage of Tureano Johnson last October in Indio, California. The bout was the second at middleweight for Munguia, a former WBO junior middleweight champ who remains the number-one contender for the WBO middleweight title currently held by Demetrius Andrade.
Munguia was due to return to the ring on April 24 versus Sulecki, who withdrew from the bout due to an alleged elbow injury. Whispers swirled of the former middleweight title challenger being displeased with the relative short notice and prior uncertainty surrounding his travel visa. Event handlers moved on to unbeaten D’Mitrius Ballard, a Golden Boy-promoted middleweight who agreed to terms along with the date switch to April 23. That bout subsequently fell through after Ballard suffered an injury that ultimately resulted in the show as a whole moving to June 19.
With the new date, Munguia was once again able to look to Sulecki who came in as the preferred opponent by DAZN, who sought to have the event air earlier in the day to align with primetime in Poland. Terms were reached with the revised date announced in late April. Things have since went south for Sulecki, although he has been bailed out by his countryman.
Szeremeta (21-1, 5 KOs) has not fought since suffering his lone defeat last December. The moment came in a failed title bid versus two-time and reigning IBF middleweight title claimant Gennadiy ‘GGG’ Golovkin, who floored the 31-year-old Polish contender four times en route to a 7th round stoppage in their DAZN main event from Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.
The most recent bouts for Munguia and Szeremeta both took place without fans in attendance. Their upcoming clash will come with a crowd on hand, with the venue allowing up to just below 40% capacity.
The balance of the show remains intact with the preservation of the fight date.
Also included on the show, 2012 Olympic Bronze medalist Marlen Esparza challenges for her first world title, as the Houston native faces WBC flyweight titlist Ibeth Zamora. In the evening’s chief support, unbeaten super middleweight contender Bektemir ‘Bek The Bully’ Melikuziev (7-0, 6KOs) faces veteran trialhorse Gabriel Rosado (25-3-1, 14KOs) in a scheduled 12-round regional super middleweight title fight.
Rosado was rumored to be among those considered to replace Sulecki when news first broke of the main event shakeup.
Re: Jaime Munguia vs. Kamil Szeremeta - June 19, 2019
Jaime Munguia has never been the type to stress over who is standing in the opposite corner on fight night.
Of greater concern to the unbeaten Tijuana native is the ability to perform in front of a live audience.
“I’m very happy, pleased to be fighting in front of fans again,” Munguia told BS.com of his upcoming June 19 DAZN headliner. The former WBO junior middleweight titlist was due to face Poland’s Maciej Sulecki, though all indications now point to another Polish contender in Kamil Szeremeta replacing his countryman in the main event at Don Haskins Center on the campus of University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP).
The bout is the second for Munguia (36-0, 29KOs) since the pandemic, though his first with fans in attendance in more than a year. The unbeaten 24-year-old has not fought in front of a live crowd since last January, when he stopped Ireland’s Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan in the 11th round of their DAZN-aired middleweight bout at Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
Munguia’s lone bout since then came last October, when he stopped Tureano Johnson in the 6th round of another DAZN main event which aired behind closed doors at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in indio, California. The show was limited to essential personnel, with fans not permitted at the time due to social distancing measures as much of the world was still combating the coronavirus pandemic.
“It was hard and also kind of depressing fighting without the public,” admits Munguia. “We did what we had to do but it was just weird. It’s kind of like fighting in the gym but at least in the gym we can train with music, we can have fun and all that.
“I’m just glad to fight again in front of my fans. It's been more than a year since I’ve been able to experience that.”
The return to normalcy would have come much sooner, only for bad luck to endure Munguia’s previous fight date. He was due to face Sulecki on April 24 from this very venue, only for the former middleweight title challenger to withdraw due to an alleged injury. Sulecki was replaced by unbeaten D’Mitrius Ballard, who was diagnosed with a legitimate injury less than two weeks prior to the event, prompting Golden Boy Promotions and Zanfer Promotions to move off of the date.
All involved parties were able to hustle to secure the June 19 date, which has only heightened anticipation.
“A lot of my friends and fans who follow me have been anxious to see me fight,” admits Munguia. “They’ve been asking when they can buy tickets for my fight so now they have the opportunity to see me live.
“They can come but for my fans in Tijuana it is a bit far. They can’t cross into San Diego so they have to fly from Mexico to Dallas and then make their way to El Paso. But I’m confident my fans in the area will turn out and I expect to have a lot of support.”
Re: Jaime Munguia vs. Kamil Szeremeta - June 19, 2019
Jaime Munguia closed the strong stage of his preparation on Tuesday in Temoaya, State of Mexico, and exhibited great physical and boxing form - for his scheduled return to the ring on Saturday, June 19, in El Paso, Texas.
Munguia will defend his WBO middleweight Intercontinental championship, in a contest being carried by DAZN and TV Azteca.
Munguia (36-0, 29 KO's) will face Polish contender Kamil Szeremeta (21-1, 5 KO's), in an interesting contest at 160-pounds.
Tijuana's Munguia, a former WBO junior middleweight champion, will have his third fight at middleweight. Szeremeta's last fight came in December of last year, when he lost his undefeated record after being stopped in seven rounds by IBF world champion Gennady Golovkin.
Munguia's tough workload in Temoaya lasted five weeks.
In his final tough day in the camp, Munguia went through twelve rounds of sparring with different boxers. The fighters who came in to exchange punches with him were Alexis Gutiérrez, Damián Sosa, Elvis Salazar and Venezuelan Endri Saavedra.
The Tijuana boxer impressed with his power and speed, as well as with the precision and variety in his punches, so his team, led by Erik Morales, was satisfied.
After training, his weight was checked and he was already very close to the super middleweight division, 10 days before he has to step on the scale, so for the remainder of this week, and when he travels to Texas, his job will be one of maintenance and ease.
In Szeremeta, the upcoming contest could be the final fight for Munguia before he receives the opportunity to contend for a world title - whether it's against IBF champion Golovkin or the current WBO world champion Demetrius Andrade.

Yes. However, since his first EBU title fight & before losing to Golovkin, he was 5-0, 3 KO's, he knocked out 33-2-1 Alessandro Goddi and 25-1-2 Ruben Diaz for the first time in their careers. Szeremeta is not a big puncher obviously, but surely hits stronger than his record suggests - he had problems with timing and with varying the strength of the blows.

Ruben Diaz has an obscenely padded record. Excluding the Szeremeta fight, each of Diaz’s last ten opponents entered the ring having previously suffered an average of ten losses.
And Alessandro Goddi is a completely nobody. He hasn’t even achieved anything at European level!
I’m sorry, but Kamil Szeremeta is a feather-fisted fighter that has never beaten any legitimate world-rated opponent.
Flukes happen in all walks of life, and even Paul Malignaggi has scored a first round KO, that doesn’t mean he hits much harder than his resume suggests!

''Much'' harder no but yeah, Szeremeta hits harder than his record suggest, but obviously it doesn't mean that he is a puncher. He is not and will never be. And I guess that he will try to look for a point win anyway rather than looking for a KO punch. The problem is that his stamina seems to be pretty average.
Diaz's record isn't great of course, but does Takeshi Inoue, Dennis Hogan, Patrick Allotey, Gary O'Sullivan have that much better records than Diaz? I'd say no. Looking at resumes, Szeremeta is top 2-3 Munguia has ever faced.

Szeremeta isn’t facing 3G here. Munguia is NOT a great boxer, especially defensively. I also do not think that he has 3G power and chin.
This is a good test for both. Szeremeta has been in with the best in 3G. Munguia may be in for a long, difficult night.
Re: Jaime Munguia vs. Kamil Szeremeta - June 19, 2019
Former world title challenger Kamil Szeremeta (21-1, 5 KOs) will step in to face Jaime Munguia (36-0, 29 KOs) in a 12-round bout for the WBO Intercontinental middleweight championship.
“I have a lot of experience when it comes to opponent changes,” said Jaime Munguia. “Obviously, it’s different at this level because the preparation is stronger and more strategic. However, I take it very calmly and we are going to make the necessary adjustments to walk away with our hand raised in ivctory on June 19.”
The fight will take place on Saturday, June 19 at The University of Texas at El Paso’s Don Haskins Center and will be streamed live exclusively on DAZN worldwide, excluding Mexico, beginning at 12:30 p.m. PT/1:30 p.m. MDT/3:30 p.m. ET.
“I take my hat off to Jaime Munguia because he has remained calm and focused on his fight on June 19 despite so many changes,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy.
“I am confident that he will make all the necessary changes and adjustments in order to walk away with his hand raised in victory. Kamil Szeremeta is the perfect challenge to show the world why he deserves a world title opportunity.”
In the co-main event, rising Uzbek contender Bektemir “Bully” Melikuziev (7-0, 6 KOs) will face his toughest test to date against former world title challenger “King” Gabriel Rosado (25-13-1, 14 KOs) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in a 12-round fight for the WBO Intercontinental and WBA Continental Americas Super Middleweight Titles.
“I am delighted to be returning in such an important fight against Jaime Munguia,” said Kamil Szeremeta. “I understand the situation. Fight night is less than two weeks away. However, I’ve been preparing for an opportunity like this, and I will make sure to take it advantage of it. This June 19, I will score the upset against Munguia.”

True. But, I think he has the boxing chops to give Munguia a test. I am not saying he will win.

What are you saying ?
Will Szeremeta go 9 rounds ?
If Munguia doesn't stop him inside that it won't look so good I would have thought.

I think that he might take it to a decision that will be uncomfortable.
On the other hand, if Munguia can put Szeremeta away without much trouble, maybe he can get 3G to bite, or force Charlo’s hand.
Charlo is fighting a can Munguia discarded four years ago.

Is this fight def happening cant see it on boxrec schedule??
Munguia should deal with Szeremeta easily enough, Szeremeta took his lumps against Golovkin, was down about 4 times but never badly hurt, still he got pulled on his stool deservedly so, Munguia not the monster at 160 that he was at 154 but still beating solid enough competition, no world beaters yet and Szeremeta looks like another cert, he should stop him
