Other than Martinez the Brits have done well against the Argies, Corti lost to Eubank and Pyatt, Dominguez to Nelson And Enzo Macc

There was a very good Argentine heavyweight by the name of Eduardo Corletti who was based here for a while in the 1960s and beat the likes of Billy Walker, Johnny Prescott, George Chuvalo and Joe Bygraves on these shores. He just missed out on the eight-man tournament to find the successor to Muhammad Ali after Ali was stripped of the world heavyweight title in 1967. Ironically, the winner of the tournament, Jimmy Ellis, was Ali's sparring partner.

There was a super featherweight/lightweight who came over and lost to Steve Boyle at lightweight but gave him a hard time but stopped Mark Reefer in the 12th - both fights for the WBC international title.

Yeah, great call. Pedro Armando Gutierrez was slippery, resilient and loaded with stamina. The Reefer knockout was a bad one, sadly. Mark went down on his face.

Wasn't that when Reefer killed himself to make the weight, the rum our was that he was a couple of pounds over and the scales were loaded

I think Julio Cesar Vasquez had a few fights in the UK, I remember him losing to Robin Reid later in his career but I think he won some too.

Marcelo di Croce destroyed Daren Dyer.

Kinda lower level but Juan Carlos Scaglia made a fool out of Glenn Campbell showing that "Bury Bomber" had little else outside his concussive punch.

Someone mentioned Jelio Cesar Vazquez. Yeah, he fought in Britain and he fought in additional Matchroom/ScreenSport-shows but I don't think he ever met British opponent. Beat Alphonso Bailey & Ahmet Dottuev in those broadcasts.

I remember reading at the time in BN that the fight with Boyle (in Glasgow I think it was...) was a bit of a robbery, I didn't see the fight but read it in BN at the time but I remember the feeling that Boyle was very fortunate to get the win against Gutierrez, what's your recollection, Bennie?

Yes, it was desperately close. I've just read the BN report and the result got a mixed reception in the pro-Boyle crowd. Boyle struggled to catch Gutierrez and his work was predictable but he plugged away throughout the 12-rounder and got it on aggression, I suppose.

I remember that Boyle was originally slated to meet former WBC super-featherweight champion Rolando Navarette on the night but Navarette had done time in a Honolulu jail for rape and that may have ruled him out. Navarette, a southpaw like Boyle, was past his best and much easier to hit than Gutierrez, although he would have proved dangerous for a few rounds.

Didn't know it was an opponent change, that would have been a dangerous few rounds for Boyle around that time, didn't Navarette make a comeback in the nineties in the Philippines? Or am I misremembering?

Corti was a big risk Barry Hearn picked for Eubank. He’d only lost his internation amateur fights to reigning world #1s on splits!

Sherry incidentally beat the world #1 Cuban on a split (and was signed by Sugar Ray Leonard right after).

Ray Close and Dan Schommer were also top amateurs, Close losing 3-2 to Maske and Schommer beating Virgil Hill 5-0 in 84.

So much for Eubank fighting ‘bums’. More than likely Matchroom just didn’t do their research well, because nobody else would fight those guys.
