Andy Ruiz Jr. vs Luis Ortiz PPV opens up for WBC #1 heavyweight spot

A fight between Andy Ruiz Jr. and Luis Ortiz is gathering pace after Deontay Wilder secured his trilogy fight with heavyweight rival Tyson Fury.

As WBN first reported, Ruiz and Wilder, are on a collision course in the future for an Al Haymon Pay Per View. Had Wilder failed to win the arbitration, that fight could have been on the cards later this year. And it still could be provided Wilder gains revenge.

But for now, Ruiz has to land a big fish to keep his PPV run going before the potential Wilder encounter. The ideal candidate has emerged in Ortiz.

Both remain rated in the top five of the World Boxing Council Ratings, and WBN understands there are viable reasons to suggest the clash could get sanctioned as a final eliminator for the number one spot.

Currently, Oleksandr Usyk lies second on the rankings. WBC chiefs will remove the Ukrainian in the coming weeks once his WBO mandatory fight with Anthony Joshua gets confirmed.

The WBC always removed a boxer if they fight for another organization title. Therefore, that leaves Ruiz Jr. and Ortiz as the next two due to Wilder being out of the equation.

Fighting for the title will either push Wilder to champion status or see him drop back a few places until he gets another win on his record. A victory for Fury would also be the primary reason why Ruiz and Wilder wouldn’t meet later this year.

ANDY RUIZ JR PPV

It’s not rocket science that you don’t put a top fighter into a massive Pay Per View on the back of two defeats in a row. Wilder would have to return with a win, potential on a double-header card with Ruiz in November or December to get back in the mix.

By that time, Ruiz could be the WBC’s number one contender. The Wilder PPV then becomes even more lucrative as a possible battle for the mandatory spot to Fury.

It’s hard to imagine Wilder getting another opportunity at Fury if he loses to “The Gypsy King” twice. However, if he earns that shot, there’s not much Fury can do in that respect.

Rankings supplied by the WBC have altered little over the coming months due to the pandemic. But with all the major stars being in action over the summer, plenty will switch around before the fall.

Whilst I am indeed for this fight happening (Ruiz Jr. by stoppage for me), why do I get the feeling we are going to see Whyte getting screwed out of the mandatory position again.

This is a good matchup. I expect a narrow points win for somebody. Can't see a KO either way here. It's not completely out of the question, but I don't see it. They're both about the same level of skill as boxers. Ruiz is younger and fresher which may give him the edge he needs.

Damn good matchup. Hopefully it happens. Actually, it's pretty hard to predict the winner. The dark grandpa is too obscure, he showed some great skills against some great bums and outboxed the sweet science genius Wilder, where he still got KTFOed twice. The fatty is decent boxer too, but he's inconsistent, got outboxed by Parker, got dropped by Arreola. Both were caught actually, but it was the fatty, who overcame adversity every time. Something tells me, the dark grandpa outboxes the fatty, but I can be wrong.

 a few years later.
You mean 5 or 6, as in before Ortiz got dropped off the books at Matchroom, when he was actually in his 30's?
No good can come of this. Ortiz can't go rounds anymore unless he juices until his balls look like raisins
If he can't get fat Andy out by the 6th, it is going to be a sad horrible beat down of an old man.

If Ruiz takes this fight, which I doubt, he will get his ass handed to him by old man Ortiz.

I don’t mind the fight, but let’s have it for what it is, a couple of decent heavyweight, this is not elite.
I was Ruiz is coming off two bad performances and Ortiz is old as fornicate, Ruiz might just be top 15 but Ortiz is not.

I'm going to throw this out there and say that Ortiz actually takes this one. I know he's old, but he's a much better boxer than Arreola. Put me down for the upset: The old man on points.

Well, according to our very own Boxrec forum rankings (the ones we vote on, not the website) they're both top 10, aren't they?

EDIT: My mistake. We have Ortiz at number 11.

They are, but our rankings seem to have a lot of inertia.

Ruiz is decent but Ruiz’s ranking comes from Aj 1, and fair he won 3 belts via ko, but to me in that fight he didn’t look great, just caught AJ with a good equilibrium shot. But as I said credit it fair for him to move up to 2 in the world there, However since then he is coming off two very poor performances since..

Ortiz is 42 (minimum), his best win in the last 5 years is hammer, second best is probably Dave Allen.... hard for me to have that top 15. I guess some could though. I have him like pulev and povetkin, so far past it they arnt really top 30, but due to inertia are considered top 10 by many.

As I said I don’t mind the fight. I like it, but to me it’s mabey 14th best vs 25th but I just know in the states it’s gunna get hyped as 4th vs 5th... that’s my only issue with it. (I think chisora beats both)...
