Is the middleweight division the most frustrating weight class in boxing?

Is the middleweight division in a terrible state right now?

Here are the aggregated ratings of the 160lbs division (based on the numbers provided by The RING, ESPN, TBRB & Boxrec):

1. Jermall Charlo
2. Gennadiy Golovkin
3. Demetrius Andrade
4. Jaime Munguia
5. Ryota Murata
6. Erislandy Lara
7. Sergiy Derevyanchenko
8. Chris Eubank Jr.
9. Maciej Sulecki
10. Rob Brant
11. Esquiva Falcao
12. Liam Williams
13. Zhanibek Alimkhanuly

From the names listed above, the only bouts involving both fighters have been:

• 20/10/2018 - Rob Brant defeated Ryota Murata
• 29/06/2019 - Demetrius Andrade defeated Maciej Sulecki
• 12/07/2019 - Ryota Murata defeated Rob Brant
• 5/10/2019 - Gennadiy Golovkin defeated Sergiy Derevyanchenko
• 26/09/2020 - Jermall Charlo defeated Sergiy Derevyanchenko
• 17/04/2021 - Demetrius Andrade defeated Liam Williams

The only scheduled bout is (and why does no one care about this fight): :o

• 26/06/2021 - Rob Brant vs. Zhanibek Alimkhanuly

What’s gone wrong? Why aren’t the top 160lb-ers fighting each other anymore? And why are so many fighters rated so highly, even though they’ve never defeated any decent middleweight names?

Thoughts?

They need a WBSS type program for the top 8.
Never happen, we have a bunch of over paid princesses waiting for some big payday, or lots of little insignificant pay days.

And don't get me started on the HW's :witzend:

Couldn't have said it better myself, except no superstar among them.

Exactly Oogs, none except GGG have done enough to warrant PPVs, yet want that sort of money. They are coasting away their careers, waiting for some perceived massive pay that isn't coming. Canelo is happy not having to drain down to middle, after Plant he can sit at Super and dictate who/what/where holding all the marbles.
Maybe I'm a bit jaded, but by the time one of the top guys faces off, we either won't care (ala Brook Khan) or their prime will have slipped away like GGG.
Or both.

I hate to say this, but I 100% agree with you guys.

The only thing that frustrates me is that everyone criticises Jermall Charlo for not fighting Demetrius Andrade.

But the same people that criticise Jermall Charlo intentionally choose to remain silent about the reason why all the other top dogs at 160lbs aren't fighting each other.

In my mind, you can'tr criticise Jermall Charlo, without criticising all his peers, because they're all doing the same things. They’re all a bunch of ᾦᾃἤkḕṛṡ!

Ultimately, the 160lbs weight class is in a terrible state, they're all ducking each other (refiusing to take risks), because they all want that Canelo mega-payday, even though it's not going to happen for most of them.

I've never seen the 160lbs division look so bad. And every single one of the top dogs deserve to be ridiculed for their risk aversion!

:TU: Used to be the middleweights gave you the KO power of HW's with the speed of the lighter weights. Gave the best mix of both worlds. Today they are a bunch of no names fighting on ones.

The big name 160s ggg, charlo and Andrade don’t wanna risk a potential canelo pay day. And the levle bellow guys want to fight ggg or charlo for a payday.

Everyone is waiting for payday, no one is moving fowards in there career.

I don't much care about the lower weights, so it's impossible for me to evaluate the whole picture, but the MW is frustrating indeed, despite the fact that it has some talents, that's why it keeps some interest and hopes. Golovkin vs Charlo is a damn good matchup, but both of them are f*cking bumfighters.

A WBSS with this division would be decent if you could get these guys away from their respective promotional companies.

It's a massive shame, MW is traditionally one of boxing's blue riband weight categories but it's now a wasteland with guys not fighting each other.

If not for Pacquiao-Spence coming up I might argue welterweight is an even bigger dud.
