Imagine if the various broadcasters had agreed to work together to stage an event involving the biggest bouts from last weekend’s fight cards?
• (ESPN+): Vasyl Lomachenkovs. Masayoshi Nakatani
• (ESPN+): Rob Brantvs. Zhanibek Alimkhanuly
• (DAZN): Daniel Matellonvs. Jose Argumedo (World Boxing Association Interim World Light Fly Title)
• (DAZN): Julio Cesar Martinezvs. Joel Cordova (World Boxing Council World Fly Title)
• (Showtime PPV): Gervonta Davisvs. Mario Barrios (World Boxing Association World Super Light Title)
• (Showtime PPV): Erickson Lubinvs. Jeison Rosario (WBC Junior Middleweight eliminator)
• (Showtime PPV): Batyr Akhmedovvs. Argenis Mendez (WBA Junior Welterweight eliminator)
It’ll surely be reminiscent of the sort of major events that Don King used to provide during the 1990’s, which garnered massive viewing figures.
Instead, EPSN, DAZN & Showtime staged all these events at (roughly) the same time last weekend, resulting in cannibalisation of audience viewing figures, meaning that boxing will continue to be regarded by the various networks as a niche sport.
The powerbrokers of boxing continue making strange decisions that results in them shooting themselves in the foot!
