Hatton has began spouting to anyone who’ll listen lately that Kostya Tszyu was ‘the number-one best pound-for-pound fighter in the world’ when he beat him.

What garbage is this? Clearly Floyd Mayweather was a totally different class to anyone else at the time for me.

Tszyu looked slow, old and heavy-footed against disinterested contender Mitchell in 2004 the fight before - a guy he’d already measured down years before. He was rusty against Hatton and not quite shot but not far off - nowhere near one of the best fighters in the world at the time.

I remember seeing Tszyu in 1994 against top guys. He probably peaked around 96 v Bergman.

Did mayweather even have a belt at that point? he had just fought 2 pretty average opponents in 140 lb elliminators... If mayweather was above Kosta at that point it probably wasnt definant. Mayweather was clearly on the up, costa on the down, but Ratings always have a bit of a lag.

Does it matter? He was the best.

He was the no 1 in the division by a country mile and definitely consensus top 5 pound for pound. Hatton was a huge underdog that night.

Tszyu as I remember it was very inactive before Hatton - 1 fight in 2 and a half years! And was probably a bit flattered by his previous fight with Mitchell. Mitchell wasn’t a bad fighter, but Tszyu really seemed to have his number. The loss to Phillips was fairly terrible, but generally he did well against what was a bit of shallow pool at the time. Certainly he would have been outclassed by De La Hoya if that match was ever made.

East to pick out flaws in any win. At the end of the day he beat the number one in the division in a fight many thought he would lose.

Yes, it was a solid changing of the guard type affair. In the mould of Barry McGuigan and Pedroza. The veteran champion meets a young, hungry challenger and comes in 2nd place. I don’t think Hatton was ever that sharp or determined again. Probably too much yo-yo dieting, etc.

True - it was a great win, but the timing and matchmaking were perfect

I was at both. MEN was full. Wembley wasn’t. You had a red band the entire way around the stadium of empty seats. I don't know what the capacity of Wembley is but I’m fairly sure it’s more than 80k

Half empty is wishful thinking. I’d say it was about 90% full.
