Khan knocked down in ragged win

bbc

Full coverage from 1900 GMT Friday on Sport on Five on BBC Radio Five Live
Olympic silver medallist Amir Khan survived a huge scare to win on his debut in the senior Amateur Boxing Association Championships.
Khan was in control when Craig Watson stepped in with a superb left hook and dumped his opponent on the canvas.

But the teenager recovered his composure to record a 21-9 points win at Preston's Guild Hall.

Khan has opted to step up from the lightweight division to light welterweight.

Khan will discover on the night who he must beat to progress to the national finals in London later this year

WOW that's a bit of a comedown..... good on Watson, shows he wasn't intimidated.

Does anyone know anything about Watson's record?

Was it a heavy knockdown?

could be a wake up call for him getting decked like that, how did he look , i expect he's still quite small for the weight at the moment

The BBC radio team made out he was in a real brutal brawl. BUT, it should be noted that BBC radio have in past highly exagerated certain fights and situations.

I doubt its worth worrying too much, I would be supprised if there are any fighters who were not shocked at some point as ameturs. Furthermore I would rather he suffers these befor he turns professional.

I think has too much preassur becuase his ametur career is under such screutany because of his obviouse natural tallent dissplayed in the olympics.

Goes to show though your only one punch away, Khan should have a closer look at the signing on money , bet it won't be has much it was last month , it will be even less if he gets beat and the odds for that happening are quite high.

Personally I reckon he should screw them has much has he can and take it from there. Theres lots of Silver medalist out there who did'nt make it in the pro's, grab it while ya can

I was quite shocked when I saw the clip on Sky News this morning, but it's hard to imagine an in-form Khan getting nailed like that.

And it is the amateurs. Remember David Tua getting blown away by Felix Savon? As good as the Cuban was he would have barely tickled the pro version of the Samoan.

And Tua getting bent double by Izon in the Olympics. Apart from a couple of shaky moments here and there from huge head shots, I've never seen Tua hurt, but Izon caught him a peach.

I expect Watson has earnt himself a pro payday with Khan with that knockdown.

Good for him.

TO me that is a good argument for him staying ametur because it is clear he has more to learn.

It's no big deal him getting floored, but as I've said all along, there is no guarantee that just because he has excelled at a high level so early, that he will become a great professional fighter. He has natural athletic ability, and good timing, but he's got a fornicate of a lot to learn to become a proper all round fighter. People talk about it like it's a given that he will be a world class professional, it's anything but. The level of dedication required, and the amount of pain he will have to endure as a professional, is a world away from the (comparatively) cotton-candy world of amateur boxing where fights are stopped on a nosebleed or when someone looks a bit wobbly.

I'm not saying he WON'T go on to big things, I'm just saying it is yet to happen.

Yeah in a way, but what if he does not fulfil promise at the higher weight, the big signing bonuses will disappear - a silver medal is quickly forgotten if you get stooped in teh ABAs....

toitally agree James, though im not so sure about his athletic ability after his perfromance on Superstars. Didnt strike me as a naturally gifted sportsman at all.

Touch of the Naseems about his gloating on the gym test, even with putting his feet behind the line he wouldnt have got anywhere near Jack's record. Did well in the run though it perplexed me that Jamie baulch and Ledejo both ran the corss country but Iwan thomas didnt, if he had Amir would have been 2nd.

Still we dont really care how crap he is at rowing more interested in his boxing talent which potentially is enormous.

Yes I did notice he wasn't particularly co-ordinated, and his balance looked suspect. I would have said it was due to him being out of shape, but if he was, he wouldn't have won the run.

Each competitor has to sit out two events, and as Euan Thomas was a champion BMX rider, he probably figured he was going to win that one, whereas in the longer run he may have figured he would have more competition. He was wrong.

The cyclist was absolutely crap at everything. Shows that although they are great at spinning their legs around, they aren't really fit in other ways, his co-ordination and general physical strength was terrible.

Boxers should never believe their own hype, sadly Mr Khan is already showing signs of complacency. He is only 17-18 to say he is having weight problems at that age is ridiculous. The only reason a fighter cant make the weight is sheer laziness, and looked what happened.

Looks like a slip to me... look at the delay between contact and reaction... and the speed with which he got back up.

Who are the 2 guys in the first pic?
