Abel Sanchez: Ruiz Does Not Want Wilder Right Now, He'll Get Slept

Abel Sanchez, the former trainer for former unified heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz, does not expect the Mexican boxer to fight someone like Deontay Wilder in the near future.

Ruiz captured the IBF, WBA, WBO, IBO titles back in June of 2019, when he shocked the world by stopping Anthony Joshua in seven rounds.

Joshua reclaimed the titles six months later, when he outboxed Ruiz over twelve rounds.

Ruiz, with new trainer Eddy Reynoso, returned to the ring in May - and won a tough decision over countryman Chris Arreola. But during the fight, Arreola had his own share of success as Ruiz was rocked and dropped.

Wilder was scheduled to challenge WBC world champion Tyson Fury on July 24.

The fight was pushed back when Fury tested positive for COVID-19.

Both sides are now looking to reschedule the fight to date in October.

In recent interviews, Ruiz has mentioned his desire to face top names - like Wilder.

Sanchez does not believe that.

"He doesn’t want to fight Wilder. He’ll be flat on his back and will be hurt. Tyson Fury is a special talent. Andy Ruiz is not yet," Sanchez told Fight Hub.

"Wilder can do the same thing Arreola did [in dropping Ruiz], but it would be ten times harder, and he’ll be sleeping."

Sanchez is hoping that Reynoso will continue to improve Ruiz and make him a top heavyweight.

He says Ruiz will have to train in the same exact manner as Reynoso's top student - Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.

"I hope he’s going to continue the discipline with Eddy. If Eddy can get it out of him, I think he’ll make him a better fighter. Right now, he’s still marginal. In today’s boxing, and in athletics, whether it’s football, baseball or boxing, you can’t train for two months, and then take two months off and go party, get fat and go back and do it again,' Sanchez said.

"That’s been his MO, and that just cannot be. He’s got to get right back in the gym, just like Canelo does. Every time you see Canelo fight, he’s right back in the gym the next week. That’s the modern athlete - that’s what the athlete has to do. If Andy chooses not to do that, then it’s going to be the same Andy all the time.

"No improvement, no further development. He’s not that hard to hit, and he wasn’t hard to hit in my gym. He’s got fast hands and great skills. Those two things are not going to make you a world champion again. He caught Joshua on an off night, and he had the best night that he could ever have, and he became champion. I hope that he doesn’t expect it to be that easy again."

To directly address Abel Sanchez’s claims, we already know for certain that Andy Ruiz Jr. has lost a significant amount of weight within the last 18 months or so.

He’s went from 310lbs to officially weighing 256lbs for his most recent outing, which is the same weight he weighed for the Joseph Parker bout of 2016. And from the recent video footage I've seen, he's either continued losing weight or he simply looks slimmer, due to his body composition changing.

We also know that Andy Ruiz Jr. has become a gym rat since he joined Eddy Reynoso’s camp in October 2020, which can be verified by reviewing the social media posts of Canelo and Ryan Garcia. He’s been in the gym full-time since he joined Reynoso’s stable, even when he hasn’t got a fight lined-up.

For sure, Andy Ruiz Jr. looked subpar against Chris Arreola for the first three rounds of that bout, but I think it was mainly caused by Eddy Reynoso trying to change his fighting style (too much and too soon), resulting in Andy being off-balance.

It initially felt (to me at least) that Ruiz Jr. was stylistically trying to be the heavyweight equivalent of Canelo. He was doing things that seemed unnatural to him. He wasn't being "himself", if you know what I mean.

As soon as Ruiz Jr. abandoned that game plan from the fourth round onwards, moving forward as the aggressor, he instantly found his comfort zone and pretty much owned the winning momentum for the remainder of the bout.

And that’s the reason why I feel that Andy Ruiz Jr. beats Deontay Wilder. The Mexican-American can box, has an excellent engine, he’s very durable, has fast hands and also throws a good variety of combos.

I don’t think Andy is capable of beating AJ or Fury… and I’m not even sure if he can beat Dillian Whyte or Oleksandr Usyk either, but I’d still give him an excellent shot against Wilder, because styles makes fights.

If ‘The Bronze Bomber’ fails to dispose of Ruiz Jr. early, then I’d heavily favour the Mexican-American to outpoint or score a late stoppage over Wilder.

everybody who knows how to move his head, has the basics of measuring distance dialed in, doesn't jump chin first or plain freeze at an incoming spastic wilder swing, beats wilder.

so aj, fury, usyk, ruiz, whyte, joyce... you name a top heavyweight... all beat up wilder no problem.

the man just can't box for shit. period.

ortiz had him out & got fucked by the doctor intervention in the first, waived off without a count and held down by the ref in his attempt to get back up and fight on in the second fight.

ortiz fault was trying to slow down the fight and being overly cautious of beyonce's right hand.

until he got caught, dropped and denied the opportunity to get up & fight on and robbed of winning a world title ortiz was winning both fights with the protected alabama lunatic.

judged fairly and with an unbiased ref & officials at work, wilder's farcical 'reign' would've ended with ortiz 1.

He sounds like a jilted ex-lover. Provided the vulnerability shown in the opening rounds against Arreola isn't indicative of an ongoing weakness then I think he need not fear anyone.

The only fighter I'd give him little chance of beating is Fury (too long, too mobile). Joshua would need to box clever like last time. I'd expect him to beat Ortiz. A fight between Ruiz and Wilder, Whyte, or Usyk would be very interesting.
