Salvador Sanchez vs Wilfredo Gomez II

Sometimes fighters make excuses.Sometimes they just legitimately lose. Sanchez was an exceptional fighter. So was Gomez. And Gomez did struggle with weight. But I also think that he may have underestimated Sanchez.
But what if Gomez hadn't had that weight struggle at that time and had properly trained and came in ,in top condition.
Would the outcome be the same?
Or would he take Sanchez best and march forward dropping bombs,slipping and sliding and possibly avenge that defeat?
I think he could.Sanchez was a great,but so was Gomez.
I remember reading an interview before Gomez vs Pintor.
Pintor said Gomez complained about being underweight...by 2 lbs.Pintor exclaimed 2 lbs!! And he said it wasn't his weight it was his heart was underweight implying Gomez lacked courage.
I think Gomez was as game as they come and that coming in proper he could have won.

Great champions adjust and find a way in rematches and win. In this case, I cannot see the great Wilfredo Gomez beating one of the greatest counterpunching and complete fighters of the last 50 years. I just can't see what can he do differently. This is the same case of Marvelous vs Tommy Hearns. I just cannot see what Tommy could have done differently to beat Marvelous.

I agree ,great Champions adjust. Maybe you're right,Sanchez was a potential unfulfilled.
But Gomez was something else. And I don't see Hearns doing anything different .
And true regarding Lopez ,but Gomez had a lot more versatility than the Great Little Red. But who knows.
I positively do not think Sanchez could have beaten Arguello at lightweight though. Just the suggestion alone always puzzled me.

Both great fighters, but I think that Sanchez prevails again.

Gomez was an underrated boxer and overrated puncher. Sanchez was full bore kryptonite for him. Nelson would have beat sal in a rematch.

Lopez rematch is a poor comparison. Little Red could only fight one way. Watch Gómez at 122 and then watch Gómez slap around LaPorte to take Sánchez’ belt at 126. Gómez beat LaPorte more one-sidedly than Pedroza or Chavez or Nelson. Very possible Sánchez wins a rematch but my guess is Gómez would box more after getting caught in the 1st round of the first fight and it would be a good, close match. I agree with Saad re:Nelson in a rematch

Agreed. The great Salvador Sanchez was once in a lifetime talent. An extraordinary complete fighter that left us wanting for more.
A win over prime Eusebio Pedroza in an unification match, and another win against Alexis Arguello at Lightweight would have probably put him on the same page with Roberto Duran as the two greatest Latin boxers ever.

I'm not so sure about him beating Arguello but it woud have been a hell of a fight that's for sure

Sanchez was having trouble making 126. My guess is he felt great in the gym at 135 and for that reason was hoping for a fight with Arguello. If he could handle the weight ok I think he'd beat Alexis.

I don't think anything Wilfredo can do to beat Salvador would work. Especially in a 15 rounder. We also don't know how the loss affected Wilfredo psychologically, which IMHO did tremendously. So he couldn't do the trick.
