I have just watched a good documentary about Hatlepool boxing in the early 1980s called
"Double Vision - Boxing for Hartlepool".

Concentrates on the George Bowes stable.

A young Dave Garside is featured. Looked him up on google.

A David Garside from Hartlepool is on google who was nicked for being part of a drugs empire. Is it Daves' son ?

Good fighter Big Dave. Beat Glenn McCrory as a pro. Did well for himself after boxing too. Well respected in the North East.

I remember he was in that lunatic Brian Taxmans book, painted as a villain and liberty taker…I’m sure was the other way about with hindsight.

Aye that Taxman book’s foreword should have been by Walt Disney. “Sixth hardest man in the world.”

They had a couple of straighteners in the 90s. Bri ended up bang on the crack for 20 year but seems to have got his recovery now.

Yes it is

I remember Dave reaching the ABA heavyweight final in 1981 after just a handful of bouts. He was stopped in the final by blubbery Londoner Adrian Elliott, who had a huge weight advantage because the super-heavyweight division did not exist at that point.
A year later, Dave was back but he was outscored by Horace Notice in the ABA quarter-finals. Notice later stopped him in the pros.

I shouldn't be surprised but another ex boxer with a dodgy son.

The amount of ex boxers who are involved in drugs with or without family members is high.

Dave wasn't big enough to be a heavyweight really.

My very first fight live at Mayfair in Newcastle was Dave headlining against Westgarth. Another northerner on the bill was Paul Lister he was quite respected too up that way.

I remember when he fought Horace Notice live on 'Fight Night' on ITV, he did OK but Horace was a cut above him and KO'd him in three. Packed out the Crowtree Leisure Centre in Sunderland - seemed like a local favourite.
