This kid is another level, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen a British amateur with the self assured quality of Pat McCormack. He reminds me a bit of a young Joe Calzaghe, in that it doesn’t matter what type of hard bastard he’s got in front of him ( as in last night ) he’s got that supreme confidence to believe he’s going to win no matter what.
Shame he got cut, that seems to be his Achilles heel from what I’ve read, I’m not sure how he’s going to make it through another two fights with that, but maybe he will - here’s hoping

being to the olympics previously and having a sh!tloads of am experience helps..........he is like one of these soviet/cuban pro amateurs. he's probably seen it all when it comes to the ams. even loma was a pro before 26
if his cut is okay he looks on route to gold.........in the ams they can be eager to stop things though, it does put him at risk

The cut looked fairly small and not too deep but it’s not in a great area.
His brow ridge comes out a little bit so he’s always going to pick up cuts unfortunately.
I’d be surprised if his cut keeps him out of the semi and it’s probably not a bad thing that he’s fighting someone who’s more of a mover next in Walsh. He’s got a good record against Walsh so hopefully he’ll pick up another win. Although I remember Darren Sutherland having a good winning record against James Degale before their semi in 2008 so surprises can happen.

if pat has to pull out now, aiden walsh would have had a hilariously easy route to the finals, beating 2 weak africans and then getting a walk over
although they let the fight continue so they seemed okay with it

It was a head butt. Weirdly I actually believe in amateur competitions where they fight a lot over a few days / week they should use a head guard, but would have to be an atypical specific head guard - no padding around most of head, jaw, ear area, the only padded area should be the part that protects the eye area. Head butt cuts are the problem,, I doubt many cuts caused by punches with those enormous padded gloves .

the most effective use for the headgear was defo in reducing cuts
tbh, if they were going to use headgear to prevent cuts, might just as well go back to the full thing instead of some funky hybrid. hardly any one is stopping each other anyway

even though the cut was caused by a butt, i assume if it's opened again by a punch and the fight is called, that would be a stoppage loss?

Good question. And yeah I would assume so. That’s would be the only fair course of action. Mind you we are talking about the corrupt incompetent IOC and AIBA

makes me wonder -- let's say it's the gold medal final, and within seconds the guys clash heads and are cut and the fight has to be stopped..........are they double champions or what?

dude in the blue was ktfo, he's fighting the red guy of course, that was red guy's 2nd stoppage of the olympics and he also decisioned the #1 seed from khazakstan
btw- the blue guy says spain, but he's actually a russian who i think got drafted in to box for them

Felt bad for that Spanish light heavy, he realised he was behind on points and was given it everything, then was 5 seconds away from going out with a creditable points loss…and BANG !! one punch from that crusher, and it’s a highlight reel devastating knockout loss for him.

Whittaker is classy for sure. To keep the Chechen puncher away all time was a solid achievement.
