he was dominant on the usa amateur scene, going unbeaten for years, won a number of international tournaments, and olympic silve
fun style, powerful guy, but there have been doubts over his size and i guess maybe chin after the first jalo fights
what do you think his pro potential is at hw?

With the right mgmt and trainer, who knows in the current division. He won’t be able to step right in as well as the Uzbek, but I could see him being matched carefully and making some noise 4-6 years from now.

His punch resistance seems just fine to me. I think 6'2 or 6'3 and 230 lb is big enough to get the job done at heavyweight. He's shown himself capable of dealing with much taller and heavier men, simply by outworking them.
I think he can make a great transition into the professional ranks. I just hope he isn't matched too strong too soon. I would like to see him be hyperactive as a heavyweight, that way he can constantly stay in shape and make the biggest impact.
I'm sure he could make cruiserweight possibly, although I think his high volume punching style would be more effective at heavyweight, since most heavyweights have such low punch numbers.
One thing is for certain he isn't afraid of anybody and he's willing to learn and improve. That much is clear from his 2019 performance to this 2021 performance.

I can’t find it. Looks more like 224-234 to me.

he is pretty thick..big legs and well muscled upper body...kinda like a hw version of canelo...if he really is 6'2, i'd guess somewhere in the 220s. jalolov looked to be 250ish

He has the heart of a champion. That’s for sure.
Solid power.
Good footwork. Excellent head movement.

He’s susceptible to being KOed. We know that at least from when Jolly clocked him. His chin remains to be tested at the pro level.
His style reminds me of Tyson tbh. He keeps his guard high and dips his head really low. Makes an advantage out of his disadvantaged height. Anyone who hates on this kid is just a hater. He’s a gutsy fighter that is fun to watch.
Are we assuming he is turning pro or is there an announcement? I’d love to see his debut.

Thanks, Iron Lady.
Frankly I’m glad to hear it. Hope he gets his vengeance against Jalolov in the pros!
There was a nice shot of the boxing olympians who medaled in the closing ceremony. They were standing together for a group picture. Torrez couldn’t be missed.

Closer to Marciano’s style, IMO. He is young and stout. Will he be able to maintain the work rate necessary over 12 rounds consistently?

I still don't see him being very special at HW. Good am but style is made for 3 rounders. Time will tell, thought.
Also, isn't his reach rather short?

He can be a good pro heavyweight, but he won't be on the level of big skilled fellas like Fury or probably Jalolov, to whom he lost for a couple of times already.
He is big enough for a HW, despite not the biggest height. His anthropometrics fits the HW standards. He is technical and fast enough. He looks durable, as he was able to pressure opponents in amateurs for all three rounds. With the proper preparation and pace he will be an effective aggressor in the pros.
He looks one-dimensional though. He only goes forward. It's necessary to see how he deals with adversity. His chin is questionable too, but this stuff is like that with every amateurs, as they hit each other with bigger gloves, where its impossible to close a fist properly.

Too small for heavyweight considering i dont rate his movement and footwork too highly, that means he will always be in range of big long guys befor he has a chance to get good work off.. Unless as he ages as a pro he develops a granite chin and ungodly power i cant see him being a world champ.
His style will also have some problems converting to longer and longer fights.. That will take time, but he has time. Ultimently if he becomes a top 10 pro i cant see it being for a long time, 4 or 5 years.
Hope he goes well and can battle, DDD, Jar Anderson and Justice Huni, once all the other names fade away from the top.. But right, or even in the next few years, i cant see him being on those guys levle.

He will be a welcome addition and can be in some fun fights. I suspect he will come up short at top level (no pun intended)
I've not seen enough of him to offer more than that.

Closer to Marciano’s style, IMO.
True, but Torrez lacks Marciano's flashy one punch KO power. That's a major difference between the two. Marciano fought like a slow caveman carrying a big, heavy club. One overhand blow from either of Rocky's mitts could put anyone to sleep.
Torrez would have to put lots of shots together in order to compensate for what (to me at least) is a lack of bonafide one punch KO power. He can't emulate Rocky's game.
I did not say (and do not believe) that he can “emulate Rocky’s game.” I said that his style of getting low and moving his head, then coming in with body shots and one off headshots is more like Rocky’s than Iron Mike’s.
I do know that a certain level of power can be developed, but I agree that Torrez Jr is very unlikely to develop the kind of power that Rocky had relative to his competition in the late 1940s and 1950s. Therefore, he will need to win on volume and attrition.
It is impossible to tell whether he can develop enough power, stamina, volume and skills to be competitive at the top in the current HW division. Possible, but very unlikely.

Of course you're going to look like a midget when you're boxing against someone six foot seven like he did in the gold medal match.

Don't care what internet listings says. You have to be good with your eyes. Even Boxrec heights are 50% wrong.
Richard Torrez he is shade under 6'2", and considering he got really long neck ( that's why he is good at moving his head) , he has shoulder height of a 6'1" fighter.

re: his chin, i think that will let him down bigly. that or Jalolov has an ungodly right hand when he wants to slap it. Torrez was out cold for a long time in their 2019 AM fight

Jalolov definitely can bang and he landed a clean left hand then, right on the target, so no surprise that Torrez was out cold. This doesn't bring answers to the chin question though. Remember Felix Savon knocking out David Tua.
