Gene Fullmer. An overachieved spoiler with a couple of past prime greats on his record, who is often treated like someone superspecial and, by some recent comments, like the last white American toughman.

Maybe Adrian Dodson, looked a million dollars on the way up and fell apart at a higher level.

Hype wise Fowler has been given the world champ in waiting and has been full of it himself. While obviously being a good fighter with good amateur credentials, I always thought he was overrated.
Nevertheless boxing is all about publicity and this is one of the reasons the Smith fight will be big and Fowler will be sitting pretty if he wins it.

Quite random, slightly disingenuous post lol. I think most boxing fans hold him as a very tough, albeit average in skill world champ. He did beat Ray Robinson and Carmen Basilio twice and also a number of top contenders. Never heard anyone describe him as super special.... are you trolling? :D

Romeo Romeo a good UK pick. The Ingle guy, Steve Barnes (?), a few ingle guys actually Khaleeq Shaffique etc.

One is Riddick Bowe - I didn't think "da f@ck' exactly as he looked the part, had exciting fights but his only wins of note are Evander who weighed 30 pounds less. Apart from that he battered old fighters, limited fighters, small fighters. And got battered by the average Golota twice

you should take a look in there.........some very knowledgable guys, but certainly some who are hardcore cock gobblers of anyone from past generations/ haters of anything modern. it works in linear fashion too, so 30s > 40s> 50s> etc...

one of them was hating on usyk's resume, saying he never beaten guys like courtney butler, michael rush, terry mcgroom, jason robinson. you probably dont recognize these names, because they are fringe american cruisers of the early 2000s,, which came before 2015 and is therefore better :yay:

liam walsh was getting a lot of insider love , ppl saying he'd easily beat pedraza and stuff...........never saw it myself. an old scott harrison gave him a decent fight

seems getting splatted by davis (no shame in that) pretty much ended his career? i know he's made a comeback, but not really picked up much steam

Couple of super middleweights. Andre dirrell. I thought he lost to froch fairly and was cowardly. Had skills but never the right attitude.

Andrade. Always looked limited but was hyped big time.

Some people might say Bute or Pavlik but they were seriously impressive on the way up.

-----

Devin (spelling?) Alexander. Never impressive to me.
-------
Steve Cunningham. Never thought he was very impressive even as a cruiser. Preferred Adamek.

He was a road warrior, who beat Wlodarczyk and Huck at their backyards, gave fights to Adamek and Hernandez. He was in the top of the CW for a decade.

Lol I will. I find it bizarre and often comedic how mythical the abilities of old timers are considered by some. Boxing has changed and I believe mproved a lot in many ways - nutrition, training methods, weight management, supplements..... and ...... the elephant in the room, PEDs...?

One could argue that old age fighters were tougher and put forward a good argument for that, but the over rating of old timers can be cringe. Every single other sport has improved considerably over the years, to suggest boxing is the exception is retarded.

Discussions on heavyweights are where the real idiocy resides....I have heard and read boxing fans say stuff like "No way would Lennox Lewis be able to stand up to Marciano's power and onslaught. He'd just walk though Lewis" etc.....I mean FFS

You'll definitely like that section, when you read about how Povetkin wasn't in Jerry Quarry's class. :OhYes:

Paul Appleby. I thought when he captured the British Title in something like his 10th fight that he would have a long and successful career.

I always say Bute with anything like this. It’s the most convinced I’ve ever been that the underdog would win & not only win but destroy him when he fought Froch.

I just didn’t see what others saw. I couldn’t believe it when people were putting him at 9 & 10 in P4P lists when his best win was that farcical victory over Andrade when he showed how vulnerable he was.

Don’t get me wrong he still had a good career but he was very well looked after before the Froch fight.

He only ever had one competitive fight from memory and that’s when he lost. I forget how many fights he had but he must have fought and beat 25 guys with only slightly more ambition than journeymen.

good shout there, know what you mean

he had some decent skills and could punch a bit, but when pressed he was very panicky
