Joe Calzaghe's on-off world title fight in Newcastle next month is now officially off.
Promoter allegedly has at last confirmed with the Newcastle Arena that the date of March 18 can now be released.

Instead Warren told Arena boss Colin Revel Calzaghe is to fight in Copenhagen on the same night.
I revealed in this column last week Warren had been talking with the backers of WBA world super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler but they only wanted a unification bout if it was in Denmark.

That now looks as though it is going ahead.

Calzaghe, the WBO title holder, has been dithering for a while now - he cancelled a world title fight in Manchester this month - and is obviously getting frustrated at how his unbeaten career is stagnating.

Calzaghe against Kessler in Denmark! It's one of those fights I'll only believe is happening when I see them in the same Copenhagen ring...

I was tempted to go off on one about Calzaghe when i started reading the post, but if he is fighting Kessler, that's most likely an improvement on whomever they were intending to match him with in Newcastle.

I wrote the Calzaghe article on BBN by the way, and wish i'd have known this before I wrote it.

Me too. Still, I don't think anyone can question Joes' heart - give him this: in the ring, he has never shown anything other than a huge fighting heart.

Outside the ring is another story, but that's more down to an inflated ego and bad business decisions all round.

Agreed, he's shown that he has a champions heart and pride in the ring no doubt.

It's just that he seems to think he's already achieved everything there is to achieve in the Super Middleweight division, and that he's already a living legend. He's a very good fighter who remains a few steps short of greatness.

In truth, he could change all that with 3-4 more big performances in genuine fights against world-level operators.

I have been stung too many times in defence of Calzaghe, but if this fight comes off, I'll be the first to celebrate.

I thought Team Palle did not have the money to make demands because they didn’t have a TV contract.
Don’t they do PPV over there to generate what they can?

My thinking is Calzaghe is going over there to build a possible match in the future with Kessler, don’t expect a good opponent for him then...again.

A Kessler fight at six-weeks notice - nah.

Rudy Markesson at six weeks notice - maybe.

Especially as at every given opportunity, Joe has said he isn't interested in fighting Kessler as nobody knows who he is/never fights outside Denmark/ etc.

Why then though would Joe travel to Denmark to fight someone with no title and who is even less known?

Because perhaps he is not as good. If Joe is serious about this step up why doesn't he have a non title fight at Light heavy. Instead of non-risk fights for the WBO title.

What is the blooming point of defending the belt, he has the record now, has plenty of cash, so why?

Not saying Markussen is a poor challenger, he is not - However, I don't think he will fight in Denmark at all.

Maybe he does need the money, i'd imagine his estranged wife will be getting some of it.

Markussen broke his hand vs Haussler and that injury came back during sparring, Sauerland and EBU accepted delay, the fight is still on in april.

They dont have any TV contract they do PPV.
They are selling the PPVs in all of scandinavia, and I just saw that norwegian Thomas Hansvoll will fight Steffen Nielsen and they are hoping for a couple of other inter scandinavian fights so they can sell more PPV in those countries, so that could be an indication that they are trying to get a bigger revenue to cover Calzaghes purse.

I know they have been sparring alot of times. Soliman was surposed to carry the danish flag for Markussen in the Ottke fight.

he'd better get ready to fight Woods first. This is Clinton's last chance realistically at a title, and I doubt he'll leave much in the locker room if anything.

This better not be a lie. How Calzaghe can dismiss a unification fight is beyond me
