Sources: Canelo Alvarez, Caleb Plant agree to terms on undisputed super middleweight title bout in November

Boxing's top star and Caleb Plant have agreed to terms for a November pay-per-view fight, sources told ESPN, that will be presented by PBC along with Canelo Promotions.

The deal ends weeks of stop-and-start negotiations between ESPN's No. 1 pound-for-pound boxer and PBC founder Al Haymon. Alvarez, who holds three 168-pound titles, and Plant, who owns the other belt, will battle to be crowned undisputed super middleweight champion.

The fight was originally being eyed for Sept. 18 in Las Vegas, but at the eleventh hour, the deal fell apart. Alvarez then entered talks for a light heavyweight title challenge of Dmitry Bivol, but before a deal could be completed, the Mexican great decided to delay his return until November so he could focus on a full training camp in San Diego.

Alvarez, 31, also wanted to focus on the man he wanted all along: Plant. More so than the man, really, is what Canelo wants to be: undisputed.

After Alvarez (56-1-2, 38 KOs) shattered Billy Joe Saunders' orbital bone in May, a ninth-round TKO to collect a third 168-pound title, he delivered a message to Plant: "I'm coming, my friend."

Plant (21-0, 12 KOs), ESPN's No. 3 boxer at 168 pounds, is the first Haymon champion to earn a crack at Alvarez, but he might not be the last. The deal between Canelo and PBC is for one fight, per sources, but there's reason to believe Alvarez will continue to face off against boxers from the stable. David Benavidez, ESPN's No. 2 super middleweight, is aligned with PBC, as is Jermall Charlo, the middleweight champion who plans to jump to 168 at some point.

Alvarez's last three fights were streamed on DAZN and promoted by Eddie Hearn's Matchroom. Although Hearn won't be involved with the promotion of the event, sources said, he's expected to work on behalf of Canelo Promotions.

A 29-year-old Nashville native, Plant thought he had a deal with Alvarez last month after agreeing to a purse worth upward of $10 million. When the pact collapsed, Plant told ESPN: "His bark is bigger than his bite."

Plant said Alvarez was set to earn more than $40 million (a career high) along with Mexican TV revenue and his Hennessy sponsorship. The sticking point, Plant said at the time, was an insistence from the Canelo side on a very particular contingency plan.

"If I get injured or sick, then he gets a late replacement for the same amount of guaranteed money, but if he gets sick or injured, then we've got to wait for him," he said.

In the event a suitable replacement couldn't be mutually agreed upon for Sept. 18, sources said, the event would be canceled rather than rescheduled.

This time around, the differences were ironed out.

Alvarez will have his chance to be called undisputed. So, too, will Plant, who will be seeking something far more: to prove he's for real in his first legitimate challenge, but also the best in the world.

I bet Eddeh is gutted he missed out on this.

Plants in for it here,got a lot of time for Plant though,although I didn't get why him & his team seemed so reluctant to get him in the biggest fight of his life

The sanctioning body traditionally creates commemorative belts for fights that are held around two Mexican holidays, Cinco De Mayo in May and Mexican Independence Day in September.

No belt was created for any of the events in September, with the WBC deciding to stake their planned title in the Canelo-Plant encounter.

This will mark the tenth commemorative belt issued by the WBC. Some of the past belts included: Huichol Belt I and II, Chiapaneco Belt I and II, Maya Belt I and II,; Mazahua and Otomi, and Mestizo.

The most recent belt is inspired by the city of Teotihuacan, which is located about 50 km northeast of Mexico City. Built between the 1st and 7th centuries A.D, it is characterized by large monuments, in particular the Temple of Quetzalcóatl and the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, established on geometric and symbolic principles. Teotihuacan and its valley display unique testimony to the pre-urban structures of ancient Mexico.

I've enjoyed watching Plant develop.

He's another one of these "world" champions who has learned on the job but has proved entertaining unlike, say, BJS.

Unfortunately there's nothing in Plant's record or performances against the level of opposition he's faced to suggest he has a hope in hell against Canelo.

What we might be able to hope for is that Plant gives it a go and not another frozen, terrified Yildrim or a running, bottle job BJS.

So if its on showtime PPV, that looks to be a blow to DAZN.

Maybe here in the UK it'll be part of the DAZN schedule, but in the states, they've lost it. Suppose having Joshua helps with their expansion plans but losing Canelo is not great.

Canelo signed a one fight deal with Haymon.

It was always gonna be on FOX or Showtime in the US.

Hopefully DAZN can get the rights worldwide.

Showtime To Produce, Distribute Pay-Per-View Fight on November 6

Showtime is back in the Canelo Alvarez business.

Boxing Scene has confirmed that Showtime will produce and distribute the telecast of Alvarez’s pay-per-view fight against Caleb Plant on November 6 from MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. FOX Sports was long believed to be the network that would produce and distribute the event, but Showtime’s Stephen Espinoza negotiated with Al Haymon for over a month and made an enticing offer to handle Alvarez-Plant.

Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions has broadcast contracts with FOX Sports and Showtime, but FOX has yet to pick up the fourth-year option on its deal with PBC. FOX Sports will co-distribute the third Tyson Fury-Deontay Wilder heavyweight championship fight along with ESPN on October 9 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

It is unclear if FOX’s shorter commitment to PBC was a factor in Haymon picking Showtime to distribute and produce Alvarez-Plant.

ESPN.com’s Mike Coppinger first reported that Showtime will handle the Alvarez-Plant fight late Saturday night on Twitter.

Mexico’s Alvarez (56-1-2, 38 KOs), who is generally regarded as boxing’s biggest star in the United States, agreed to a one-fight deal with Haymon’s company primarily because Plant (21-0, 12 KOs) owns the only super middleweight title Alvarez needs to become the sport’s first fully unified champion in the 168-pound division. Alvarez, 31, and Plant, 29, will fight for Alvarez’s WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight titles and Plant’s IBF belt.

An official announcement of Showtime’s involvement in the Alvarez-Plant event probably will be made Monday. A press conference to promote Alvarez-Plant is scheduled for Tuesday at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.

ViacomCBS, the parent company of Showtime and BS.com, is expected to allocate plenty of its vast resources toward marketing the Alvarez-Plant fight. It likely will be promoted during CBS’ telecasts of NFL games on Sundays and college football games on Saturdays, as well as during other popular programming, over the next six weeks.

Showtime televised or distributed five consecutive Alvarez fights from September 2012 through July 2014.

Three of those bouts – wins over Alfredo Angulo and Erislandy Lara and his lone loss to Floyd Mayweather – headlined Showtime Pay-Per-View events. His 12-round points win against Austin Trout aired live on Showtime in April 2013, as did Alvarez’s fifth-round stoppage of Josesito Lopez in September 2012.

Alvarez’s 12-round, majority-decision defeat to Mayweather helped generate 2.2 million buys and nearly $150 million in pay-per-view revenue.

The four-division champion signed a multi-fight deal with HBO following his controversial split-decision victory versus Lara. The first fight of that agreement – a third-round knockout of James Kirkland – aired live on HBO.

His six subsequent fights with HBO all were pay-per-view main events. Once HBO announced its decision to leave the boxing business in September 2018, Alvarez quickly aligned with DAZN.

Alvarez’s reported 10-fight, $365 million deal with DAZN never truly materialized. The Guadalajara native eventually renegotiated an agreement with DAZN after Alvarez parted ways with longtime promoter Oscar De La Hoya late last year.

Alvarez’s past three fights – wins against Callum Smith, Avni Yildirim and Billy Joe Saunders – were streamed by DAZN, but also were offered through traditional pay-per-view platforms in the United States.

Hopefully DAZN get the worldwide rights for this, so it's decent for November.

Got Canelo points. Plant is good though but don't know how will trouble Canelo.

Having already captured world titles at 154, 160, 168 and 175-pounds, Canelo (56-1-2, 38 KOs) has amassed a Hall of Fame resume at just 31-years-old. The fighting pride of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, Canelo began his quest for the undisputed super middleweight championship in December 2020 by defeating then unbeaten Callum Smith to capture the WBA and WBC titles. Most recently, Canelo added the WBO belt via a stoppage victory over previously undefeated Billy Joe Saunders in May. November 6 will be Canelo’s first attempt at an undisputed title.

Under the guidance of Reynoso, his renowned coach, Canelo has faced and triumphed over a long list of elite fighters since turning pro at just 15-years-old in 2005. Shane Mosley, Gennadiy Golovkin, Erislandy Lara, Miguel Cotto and Sergey Kovalev are among them. Canelo’s lone professional defeat came against undefeated legend Floyd Mayweather in September 2013.

The 28-year-old Plant (21-0, 12 KOs) captured his world title and burst onto the 168-pound scene by defeating Jose Uzcategui in January 2019. Plant was the underdog coming into the Uzcategui fight. He quickly set the tone scoring two early knockdowns on his way to a clear unanimous decision victory. It was an emotional night for Plant, who had dedicated his championship win to the memory of his late daughter, Alia, who passed away in 2015.

A native of Ashland City, Tennessee, Plant now lives and trains in Las Vegas, guided by his trainer Justin Gamber, along with his father and co-trainer Richie Plant. Caleb has successfully defended his title three times, dominating Mike Lee to earn a third-round stoppage at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in July 2019. He then earned a TKO victory over Vincent Feigenbutz in a homecoming bout in Nashville in 2020. Most recently, Plant bested former super middleweight world champion Caleb Truax, winning a unanimous decision in their January clash.
