Jaime Munguia-Sergiy Derevyanchenko middleweight title eliminator ordered by WBC

Jaime Munguia and Gabe Rosado have been on a collision course for a fall fight, but plans could change after a move from the WBC.

The Mexico City-based organization ordered a middleweight title eliminator between Munguia and Sergiy Derevyanchenko, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman told ESPN on Thursday. If no deal is struck by Sept. 17, a purse bid will be ordered.

If the fight takes place, the winner would become the mandatory challenger to Jermall Charlo, the WBC champion at 160 pounds. However, there's no guarantee Munguia (37-0, 30 KOs) will go through with the fight.

"Munguia just found out [about the Derevyanchenko possibility]," Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez told ESPN. "He's going to circle back with us early next week."

Munguia, a former 154-pound champion, is 3-0 (with three knockouts) since moving up to 160 pounds in January 2020. Despite his experience, the 24-year-old Mexican is still raw. He's clearly improving, though, as he raises his level of competition.

Munguia packs plenty of power and applies nonstop pressure. ESPN's No. 4 middleweight is also big and strong for the division. If he fights Derevyanchenko, a longtime 160-pounder, Munguia will still easily be the bigger man.

Derevyanchenko (13-3, 10 KOs) has lost two in a row and three of his past four. However, all three losses came against elite competition. The Ukrainian dropped a split decision to Daniel Jacobs in a 2018 middleweight title fight. The following year, Derevyanchenko fought Gennadiy Golovkin in a brutal title bout, one of the best action fights of 2019. GGG won via unanimous decision, but the verdict was disputed by many.

Against Charlo, ESPN's No. 6 middleweight wasn't all that competitive. The 35-year-old hasn't competed since that September 2020 outing.

A far better option than Rosado.

I don’t reckon mate. I guess it depends how seriously Dev is training but the version that fought the likes of Jacobs, ggg and charlo beats him, in my opinion.

Good fight if it gets made. Mung should win it. Chenko had his days.

Munguia Confident, Embraces WBC Eliminator With Derevyanchenko

Earlier this week, the World Boxing Council ordered a middleweight world title eliminator between Mexico's Jaime Munguia and Ukrainian Olympian Sergiy Derevyanchenko.

The winner of the contest, revealed the organization, will be the mandatory challenger to current world champion Jermall Charlo.

Munguia looks forward to the fight, as Derevyancehnko has fought the very best along the way - like Charlo, Gennadiy Golovkin, Daniel Jacobs, and others.

“If the upcoming opportunity is with Derevyanchenko, it was always my dream to go for the world title of the World Boxing Council. I think that I will be able to gain great experience, because Derevyanchenko has fought with all of the elite, he is a very tough opponent and it would help me to gain confidence and the fans would believe in me more. It would serve me well in the future, but I think I would come out with my hand up,” Munguia said, according to Erika Montoya.

Munguia will speak to his promoters about that fight and what's next for his career.

A former WBO junior middleweight champion, Munguia eventually moved up the middleweight ranks and is now a leading contender.

“The truth is, this is a great honor for me, a lot of pride and the truth is that I would love to be fighting with Derevyanchenko. As a child I always dreamed of having the green and gold belt and if that gives me the opportunity of qualifying to fight for the title, then I would gladly accept it," Munguia said.

Munguia took part in his third middleweight fight back in June, when he stopped Polish contender Kamil Szeremeta in six rounds at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas.

Derevyanchenko has been out of the ring since losing a twelve round decision to Charlo in September of last year.

He’d fight Derev in a title eliminator, but won’t fight Andrade for the belt.

Why do the sports’ governing bodies keep mandating their champions to face Sergiy Derevyanchenko or ordering him to challenge for their vacant titles?

He fought for the vacant IBF title against Daniel Jacobs and lost.

The following year he was then given another crack at the vacant IBF title, despite not beating anyone notable since the Jacobs loss, and was then wrongly deprived of the victory over GGG.

Immediately after losing to GGG, Sergiy Derevyanchenko was elevated to the number one spot in the WBC’s rankings, which resulted in the Ukraine suffering a close but legitimate loss to Jermall Charlo.

And despite suffering back-to-back losses and winning only one of four fights within the last 3½ years, which came against an unheralded foe, Sergiy Derevyanchenko will be engaging in a highly undeserved WBC title eliminator against Jaime Munguia.

Anyway, prediction time: I’ve always been a fan of Sergiy Derevyanchenko, but he’s showing signs of decline.

He’s recently engaged in some really tough marquee bouts, which means there’s a lot of mileage on the clock. And he’ll be 36 years of age by the time he faces Jaime Munguia.

Derevyanchenko has a tendency to get decked or hurt early, but then make a quick recovery. But he’s older now and might not be able to do that anymore.

It’s entirely feasible that Jaime Munguia will score a shockingly quick stoppage in this fight, but the greater likelihood is that he’ll earn a comfortable deserved 116-112 type decision victory.

One other factor to consider, even if Sergiy Derevyanchenko is relatively competitive against Jaime Munguia, will his fragile skin hold up? His eyes were a complete mess in both the Charlo and GGG bouts.

So the ref might be compelled to stop the fight if the Ukraine’s face (a bloody swollen mess) prevents Derevyanchenko from seeing his opponents blows.

Even if Jaime Munguia beats Sergiy Derevyanchenko, I’d be surprised to see the Mexican face Jermall Charlo.

If the underdog, Derevyanchenko, defies my expectations and upsets Munguia, then I really can’t imagine Charlo facing him again either.

Why would a fighter prefer to earn a bigger payday facing one fighter as opposed to another that’ll pay him less?

Mung is a mexican fighter prmoted by GBP and wbc sees him to have a good potential to generate big money= good fees

After Charlo would move up at 168, then Munguia would probably fight for that title if all things work well.

I'm just questioning why Munguia would give up his mandatory status with a chance at Andrade's belt? This was long before the Derevanchenko fight was even considered. It wasn't about money. He didn't have confidence to beat Andrade.
