I might be wrong but I think up until the 1980s following the tragic Ray Mancini bout and Larry Holmes knocking the snot out of Tex Cobb, that gloves for lighter weight matches were 6 oz and gloves for heavier weight matches were 8 oz.

they were 6 ouncers. Robinson objected to 8 ouncers in one of their later bouts but was forced to use them; he even said the punch that he knocked out Fullmer with wouldn't have been a knockout punch if he had 8 ouncers on.

not sure what the ounce size was,but in his 1970 autobiography,
Sugar Ray Robinson said that whenever he fought in Chicago (which is was were that fight was held)
the boxing commision there always used Frager gloves ,and those were his favorite gloves in a boxing match because they were thumb less.
BTW for their fourth fight I read that Sugar Ray Robinson had demanded 6 oz gloves not 8 oz that was going to be used,
or hr threatned to "walk" the fight.
( so Im guessing probably 6 oz gloves were used in their second fight.
