Why was this ever a rule in boxing?

Secondly would you like to see this back?

Notable fights ending on a 3 Kd rule:—

Bentt Morrison
Benn Barkley

almost always when a guy gets dropped 3x in a round it should be stopped. usually the ref will.

there are obvious cases like pac-marquez 1 and carassquila vs that korean guy (korean guy down 4x in a round, wins by ko the next round), but these are by far the exceptions

still, by having the discretion not to stop it, we ended up with the dropped guy fighting back and not losing, it can happen

YEH, 3 KD's the same round, the ref usually stops it.

Unless they're flash KD's.

The rule is never used for world title fights anymore.. Wonder when it was last used for a world title fight.

It’s weird because Nigel Benn was so exciting/vulnerable that you wouldn’t of been surprised if Barkley or Lou Gent came back and stopped Nigel after it! They dwarfed him.

DeWitt? No chance. The rule saved his well-being (literally I say).

I think it was a WBO thing wasn’t it?
Therefore Benn v Gent was manually stopped then being WBC?

Didn’t Marquez survive three knockdowns in the first vs manny?

Witherspoon never looked IMO truly out of it (other than perhaps before he went into the ring) vs Bonecrusher Smith either - I am sure that was a 3 KD rule.

Benn vs Barkley was controvesial IMO - some of them KD's were soft. So soft that Reg Gutteridge originally was very scathing of the decision to stop the fight - no realising the ref had counted all three falls as KD's. Especially as Barkley had hurt Benn also in that round.

Yes, I think Witherspoon v Bonecrusher was stopped on the three knockdown rule. Although I suspect Spoon wasn't bothered since he was being shafted by King at the time.

The 3 knockdown rules could have kept us from 2 of the most legendary comeback by Archie Moore and Manuel Marquez.

I believe the rules was made to prevent referee to give too much of a benefict of a doubt to an eventual local champion because let's face it most fight are stopped way before the third KO'd.

It's also dangerous, refs tends to actually wait for the third KO'd to stop a fight when the first 2 appened very early in the round to be sure to stop at a time when less contreversy is possible.

I'm not a big fan of this rule feels like refs are sometimes forced to stop fight they thought that should've able to continue.

I feel like this rule was invented to prevent Patterson vs Johansson I or Frazier vs Foreman I types of nonsense with tons of knockdowns and very dangerous punch landed in a very small amount of time but those days are imo well behind us so I really don't want it to come back anytime soon

A rusty Muhammad Ali pulled out three knockdowns to force an automatic stoppage of Oscar "Ringo" Bonavena in the 15th round in Madison Square Garden back in December 1970. It wasn't enough to sharpen up Ali for his mighty showdown with Joe Frazier a few months later.
Bonavena had previously floored Frazier twice in the first round of a 10-rounder at the Garden and was one big punch away from victory.

Be interesting to find out how many more big names were 1 KD away from being stopped, the Frazier one is interesting

The thrilling fight between Wilfred Benitez and Bruce Curry at the Garden in 1977 is a striking example of a brilliant fighter barely surviving a round after two knockdowns. To be honest, the three-knockdown rule is actually a hindrance because Benitez needed rescuing after the second knockdown, in my opinion, but referee Arthur Mercante waved it on. Round four...
