Title fights were different. In New York, 6 ounce gloves were banned after the Griffith-Paret bout in 1962. In Nevada, for example, middleweights were using 8 ounce gloves well into the 1980's-remember when Leonard gave up money in the Hagler bout(1987) so they could use 10 ouncers instead of the customary 8 ouncers ? In California, all fights over 147 pounds were fought with 10 ounce gloves starting in 1967.
I remember a flyweight coming to L.A. from South America in the early 70's and being shocked to learn he had to wear 8 ounce gloves-he was used to 5 ounce gloves at home.
Mike Tyson and Jesse Ferguson were granted an exemption from the 10 ounce glove rule in 1986 and fought with 8 ounce gloves in New York.
I've done a lot of research on this topic and could go on and on .

From what I remember, Tyson's manager wanted the smaller gloves to enhance Tyson's hand speed.
