Re: Marvin Johnson vs John Conteh

Conteh couldn't beat a southpaw in Mate Parlov, but Marvin Johnson was the more southpaw aggressive puncher would wear Conteh down and finished him by TKO in 13 rounds.
I forgot about Chris Finnegan, who was one southpaw that John Conteh beat. Unfortunately, as good as Finnegan was, he was a level lower than Mate Parlov and Marvin Johnson in the light heavyweight ranking southpaw chance. However, Johnson's powerful punches would be too much for Conteh to overcome.Joe.Kelly wrote: ↑03 Sep 2021, 13:48Chris Finnegan was a southpaw, and Conteh beat him twice. I haven't studied the films, so I can't say if Conteh had any trouble with Finnegan's southpaw stance.
Either way, Marvin Johnson was a much more powerful puncher than Finnegan. Everyone's seen the way he floored and KO'd Victor Galindez with a single overhand left to the jaw. If that's not a statement about punching power I don't know what is.
Conteh would have to put his boxing skill to full use if he were to evade being hit by Johnson's bombs. I'm sure John could successfully dodge Johnson's heavy punches for part of the bout, but I simply can't picture him slipping those shots over the long haul.
