Conor Benn Signs New Multi-Fight Deal With Matchroom Boxing, Eyes December Return

Conor Benn will keep his team intact as he aims to advance from prospect to contender.

The unbeaten welterweight continues his working relationship with Matchroom Boxing, with the two sides confirming a new multi-fight deal in place. News of the extended agreement comes on the heels of Benn's recent ten-round win over veteran contender Adrian Granados earlier this month in Leeds, England.

"I am extremely excited to extend my professional relationship with Matchroom Boxing," said the 24-year-old Benn. "Matchroom believed in me from the start, they gave me an amazing opportunity and have supported me to grow as a professional fighter.

"Now with the backing of a global streaming platform in DAZN we have made huge plans to be involved in big fights, headlining major events across the globe and making progressive moves towards achieving my goal of being a World Champion in the near future."

Benn (19-0, 12 KOs) has fought on Matchroom-promoted events since his celebrated pro debut in April 2016. The moment came on the undercard of Anthony Joshua's second-round knockout of Charles Martin to claim his first heavyweight title.

"I'm delighted to sign a new multi-fight promotional deal with Conor Benn," said Matchroom Sport Chairman Eddie Hearn. "I've witnessed first hand how hard this young man has worked and he now sits as a major player in British boxing."

Benn earned accolades as a formidable prospect following a terrific ten-round, unanimous decision win over Germany's Sebastian Formella last November at Wembley's SSE Arena. The win came three months after Formella suffered his first defeat, as he was outpointed by former two-time welterweight titlist Shawn Porter.

The 2021 campaign for Benn opened with an explosive performance, scoring a first-round knockout of veteran trialhorse Samuel Vargas this past April. The feat forced the boxing public to take notice, even as Vargas remains best known for his losses (Errol Spence Jr., Danny Garcia, Amir Khan, Luis Collazo, Vergil Ortiz Jr.) though none as brief as his 80-second blitzing at the hands of Benn.

Granados never quite presented the same opportunities this past September in Leeds. The bout came five weeks after its originally scheduled July 31 date which was postponed after Benn tested positive for Covid. The delay moved the fight from its own headliner at Matchroom headquarters in Brentwood, Essex to the undercard of the celebrated, though anti-climactic rematch between Mauricio Lara and Leeds-based former featherweight titlist Josh Warrington.

Benn prevailed via unanimous decision in a fight where Granados offered good work early before transitioning to survival mode down the stretch. It provided Benn with another quality win and the opportunity to close out the year on a high note.

"He next fight will be in December," confirmed Hearn. "[A]n announcement on this will be made soon."

But since then, he's come far..

We went the distance with Granados.. That calls for a new contract.

He’s had 2 easy step up fights now. We all know he can fight… surely Ed has the money to tempt Brook into a fight in the new year. If he’s fighting in December it’s going to be another ageing fighter with no real ambition to win.

No - I think they’re just being more selective with shows. He’s got a bang average Mike Garcia show in October and I’m sure Haney and or Andrade in November.

I’m guessing they are going to spend a small fortune promoting him and making him the British face of DAZN.

This contract is making sure he can’t jump ship once they’ve done the hard work and pumped the money behind him.

Fair enough there’s the possibility of Sky PPV.. but Hearn made it clear we may see the odd DAZN PPV.

One thing I really didn’t like after Benns win over the Colombian was he was walking round shouting ‘PPV’ or ‘I want ppv’ or something like that.

Moan all you want about AJ and the humble act but I never get the impression with him that he was making purse demands or shouting at the fans they had to pay to watch him before he had his first show as PPV main event. And obviously AJ went PPV earlier than anyone has.

Against Groves?

Was a good 50-50 fight tbh, but wasn’t PPV. Probably PPV so the purses could be met. Plus Frank put anything on PPV.

AJ’s first PPV was Whyte and it did nearly 500k buys which is good. There was a feud, good back story and it sold well. Straight after that he fought Martin for the world title and the rest is history.

Sometimes promoters don’t have a choice, they don’t have the funds to pay purse demands by certain boxers, so they have to put it on PPV so the fans pay the purse.

Some of these boxers don’t deserve PPV.

But if thats the case, take a small base purse and earn the rest through PPV.

It’s like Leonard vs. Hagler.

Leonard took a fixed purse of around $13m I think it was and Hagler had a much smaller purse to him, but had a bigger split in PPV’s.

In the end, Hagler earned more than Leonard because it sold well.

Is that a Dazn deal or a PPV deal ? If he thinks he is anywhere near being top of the bill in a PPV he is deluded

Its the promoters fault for giving him easy fights , and certain wins , they build him up and then pay the price , , Matchroom well has said before , they will give him a new contract now and lock him in , get him signed sealed and stuck with them ,,, thats fair enougfh but it just means he's gonna get looked after , easy fights and will not be rushed or made to fight anyone good until they can get a big name a big fight , and take him to America where he will get flogged against said big name , and then they will say he had an off night and do it again , But in the meantime if ANYONE pays for him on PPV , well they deserve to be scammed , cos there idiots ,,, Connor Benn would not beat ANY of the last 8 in the last olympics

Anyone with a modicum of boxing understanding knows that the first serious stepup and he's getting (well) beaten. They can't continue the illusion forever.

He was gonna put on monthly PPv worthy shows and then 4 times a year put on MEGA shows where each fight on the card would have been worthy of stand alone PPV on its own.

Utter garbage. The man sure talks some knackers.

I’m sure that was the plan then. But since the announcement we’ve had a global pandemic that massively affected boxing and sports networks.

You also live and learn and he probably realised that there are fighters he was paying several million a fight for (Andrade, Jessie Vargas and others) who didn’t deliver subscribers or viewers.
