Both were inconsistent, but at his very best Golota was clearly superior in front of Berbick. Golota's game was more polished, he was sharper and more versatile as a boxer. If no mental failure occured with Andrew, then Golota would comfortably outbox Berbick behind the jab and combinations, possibly stop him later in the bout.
Golota by wide dec or late (T)KO.

Golota would not stop Berbick, but out-box him for a decision win. However, if Berbick out-box and out-punch Golota on the outside and inside either to decision him or Golota would be frustrated that he would hit Berbick low caused a DQ loss.

This actually a case of two guys who were very different. Berbick won some fights against guys with more talent.
Golota had more talent and should win. However, somehow, some way, he would lose. He might perform well for a while, he might have a meltdown early. He might quit, he might have been disqualified. He would probably lose though.

I think that it's a 50-50 bout until the 1986 version of Berbick emerged. That Version of Berbick would have a 90% chance of getting Ko'd. 99% chance he would lose,at least imo.

Berbick has one heck of a chance of winning it. Golota was just so inconsistent that it's hard to really give the man a fair assessment because he was good but he was his worst enemy. I will go with Berbick.

it's a wonder golota's record isnt actually 0-52 with seemingly every fight him being touted to find a way to lose

Lol, true. Those 'find a way to lose' comments about Golota follows him everywhere, as if he quitted not 3-4 times, but 50.

People also often remember the Mike Tyson bout. Not many remember though, how Golota kept coming and fighting until the final bell against elusive Byrd and spoiling Ruiz, where Andrew was robbed by many opinions.

Andrew Golota was a world class Heavyweight at one point.
He generated a lot of attention through Bowe 1.
That's when he was hot.

Bowe was always 2 to Lewis.
Didn't matter to me what the U.S press said, I was always game for a Lewis Bowe fight in New York
Knock his ass out in New York or Brooklyn wherever he wants it.
Golota was never number 1 but did challenge for it.

He lost in different ways, but the bottom line is that he never won a big fight. He probably should have got the decision against Ruiz, and had a draw with Byrd. but still. He just never could get it done in a big fight. That it why people keep bringing it up.
Berbick was not pretty to watch. He looked awful against Carl Williams. But he did manage to score some decent wins, which is more than you can say about Golota.

Tyson, Brewster and Grant were name fighters no question.
I just thought the best Golota I've seen was during Bowe 1 and some of Bowe 2.
Bowe was easily the biggest challenge of Golotas career.

Golota was definitely a frustrating dude; all firmly established many-times-over in these here parts.
He seemingly had the package and well before the K brothers broke through in Germany.
Huge white heavyweight, excellent amateur resume, actually a half-decent athlete in terms of not just being a big and lumbering lump and able to move and throw some shots and not burdened with any history either.
But he was a complex guy who did not settle in America.... I wonder what Golota could have done if he'd been on a German promoter's books (closer to home) and lots of discipline and a steadier rise to the top in German/Polish fight venues?
