"WBC Heavyweight Rankings [Oct 2021]: Deontay Wilder remains rated #1"

Former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder remains ranked number one by the World Boxing Council despite losing for a second time running against Tyson Fury.

“The Bronze Bomber” is rewarded for a monumental effort against Fury, though. Wilder dropped Fury twice [again] in one of the most amazing top division battles for a generation.

Both Fury and Wilder secured their places in the annals of boxing history when concluding a superb saga over three years.

Wilder stays at one, with the rest of the top five unchanged. What this means for the future of the number one contender is yet to be made clear.

Fury will have to meet the winner of Dillian Whyte vs. Otto Wallin next in a mandatory bout, provided an agreement with Oleksandr Usyk for a multi-belt unification isn’t forthcoming in the next three weeks.

Usyk getting locked into a rematch with Anthony Joshua is expected to put a firm block on any undisputed plans.

Meanwhile, Frank Sanchez, Robert Helenius, and Jared Anderson all move up following their triumphs on the Fury vs. Wilder III undercard.

Sanchez went from eleventh to sixth after defeating Efe Ajagba, while Helenius jumped from twenty-first to thirteenth by repeating his victory over Adam Kownacki in a more devastating fashion.

Ajagba dropped out of the top ten following his loss.

Finally, Anderson – known as “The Real Big Baby,” entered the Top 40 Ratings for his impressive stoppage of the previously undefeated Vladimir Tereshkin.

Thoughts?

I’m not a fan of those rankings.

In my opinion, the likes of Wilder, Ortiz, Kabayel, Hrgovic, Makhmudov and Bakole are rated far too highly.

None of those guys have beaten an impressive opponent within the last couple of years or so.

And it would be an outrage, if Wilder was installed as the WBC’s mandatory challenger within the next six months or so (based solely on his current status of being the number one ranked contender).

Think about it, if Fury beats the winner of Whyte-Wallin, who’s at the front of the WBC’s title shot queue? Wilder!!!

We need a fresh set of fighters competing for the WBC’s world heavyweight title, anyone other than Luis Ortiz and Deontay Wilder.

I don't think a #1 contender that loses keeps the #1 spot.

I guess that depends on whether whoever is compiling the rankings considers anyone deserving of being ranked higher. I would drop him a few places but you could make a case for Wilder being number two after Fury ... certainly if you're Haymon's good buddy Mauricio Sulaiman anyway.

I'm just amazed they have Joyce ahead of Ortiz. So he should be but it's still shocking.

Mostly I don't think those rankings are too bad not when you consider we are talking about the WBC here.

Makhmudov might be among the ten best heavyweights around but he has done nothing to justify a top ten ranking so far. That is possibly the most jarring anomaly (given that we are well used to Ortiz being perpetually top six despite having beaten nobody of note for six years or so).

Agit Kabayel has done nothing for years and shouldn't be top 15. Beyond that my biggest complaint is that Kossobutskiy is much better than his 32 placing, I wouldn't have Alexis Garcia anywhere near these rankings and although I had high expectations for former talented amateur Joe Goodall, what has he done as a pro???. Huni is way ahead of him at this stage and I would say Jared Anderson should be much higher than forty.

That's better than their usual crappy effort though and succeeds in making the WBA's offering look pathetic by comparison.

They usually don't. Usually they're dropped to atleast 2nd to allow the legend of the next number 1 contender to begin. Not sure what the WBC thinks will happen? A lot of PBC guys there though...

They should make #1 Wilder face #2 Ruiz to get the chance at the Fury-Whyte winner. However that being said if a man loses no matter how great the performance was he should go down in the rankings so this is clearly all political.

Oh they never have. Neither has the WBA. Or really any of these organizations for that matter. They do what they feel is most convenient for them, and makes the most money.

But if they tried to pull that Fury-Wilder 4 nonsense, they will get a rude awakening from the heavyweight champion of the world because he will pull a Riddick Bowe and drop the title rather than do this crap all over again when there is no point.

in the best case he doesn't need a belt, he would be still heavyweight champion of the world above the alphabet ones.
