i was looking at the pay days from the garcia-martin card

they're as low as $2000 and most not over $15000. even now world champ gonzales only got 15k. keep in mind usd is weaker than pounds, so gonalez got 10k pounds for his title winning fight

how much can a guy really take home, after tax and trainer cuts, when he's paid 2k? even the hyped prospects like castro and pacheco, what is left of 14-15k when everyone else had dug in

for even very promising prospects, these dudes better have a day job or something, the biggest paydays in boxing are huge, as big as any in the sports world pretty much, but man, if you aint some elite level dude you are pooped

Crazy that Mikey garcia made 750 times as much as Luciano Ramos... Especialy considering the one getting the cash is there to bash up an outclassed opponent (not how it turned out i guess), and the one makeing the pennies is there to be bashed by a supierior opponent...

I always look at it as who’s the one bringing in the bulk of the revenue. Would they have sold as many tickets with a random name instead of Mikey? Almost certainly not. Would DAZN have financed the show without Mikey? No chance.

Unfortunately at a low level in the US there are thousands of boxers they can choose from and that’s before dipping in to the guys from Mexico/Argentina etc. So if one guy turns down a couple of grand then they’ll find someone else who will. The purses here for the lower level guys are similar to any other reasonably big show. The supply of low level boxers is tougher now in the U.K. as it’s difficult to manage the quarantine etc. so there’s been an increase in the money the journeymen fighters are getting because of that. Unfortunately that hasn’t happened in the US.

Also there are some guys, like Marc Castro I would guess, who would have almost certainly got paid more than his disclosed purse. He’s probably on a monthly stipend as well.

Minimum wage is $7.25/hour although some states have minimums ahead of that.

At 35 hours a week that would give an annual salary of $13.2k so £9.6k/year.

That’s not the way it works though. Would they have sold the tickets or got the money from Sponsorship/DAZN to pay Martin’s $150k if Garcia wasn’t headlining? Almost certainly not.

One things for sure though - Garcia won’t be getting another payday like that for a long time it ever again.

I think 80-20 is the most lopsided a split should be in favour of the a side but obviously I know b side boxers are entitled to take whatever they agree to. I think I heard Frank Maloney say Wlad used to give his voluntary challengers 250k euros plus their home country’s tv money, take it or leave it.

On the flip side I remember Badou Jack getting millions and Nathan Clev as champ getting $250k or something like that. It was clear there that Clev was getting some payment from a means that didn’t have to be declared ie sky tv money. Possibly that’s the case here. I remember thinking it must surely also be the case when Jason Welborn fought Charlo for supposedly $40k or so.

Yeah the reported numbers to the commission will be the minimum some fighters get. The B-side of the undercard fights won’t be getting any more than the amounts shown.

I don’t buy the 80/20 split as the money is based on the commercial value of the fighters. If one fighter is able to generate $15m of income - like Klitschko probably was - regardless of the opponent then why should he give $3m of that to a random voluntary? If they want more than the $250k plus home TV (which could be substantial for a U.K. fighter) then become mandatory and go to purse bids.

DAZN fucked up big time with Garcia. Supposedly got 7mil for the Vargas fight. Lil fat bastard laughing all the way to the bank. They basically can’t afford to pay the undercard fighters fcuk all because for some weird/obscure reason they think Garcia’s a huge sell.

Fair play to mikey, but he’s not worth that, I can’t even remember the last time he looked particularly good.

it is very poor , its why i try not to call any fighter a bum, and it is how many tickets u can shift not how good you are, lets face it boxing is a very niche sport , its fighting but people like hearn make it look glamorous sexy the lot fair pay, but fighting aint its painful anxiety ridden ,brutal ,dangerous energy sapping ,nothing good about fighting when you get older , but the promoters do well selling it
