Fittest Fighters

Was watching an old Ringside vid today, with a profile of Charles Shepherd. He did over a 1000 push-ups and sit-ups per session, and it made me wonder who were the fittest and most diligent fighters. I seem to recall that Billy Schwer used to have a really low heartbeat thus enabling him to set a ferocious pace for the whole fight.

Any thoughts?

Manuel Medina is a very fit fighter, has had numerous tough and long battles and is 5 time world champ, I beleive he once held computer box record for most number of punchs thrown in a fight. A very fit and respected fighter.

I think it may have to do with boxers that keep ticking over with their fitness between fights, some boxers are not keen on training so will only really work when they know they have a fight lined up. Others enjoy it and are always in the gym, timing the training to peak at the right times.

I think thats why alot of boxers stuggle on things like the program Superstars, when you have Footballers or Athletes they have to be at peak or near peak fitness for a long period , for a footballer between August to May, so over a long time of doing this there overall fitness is alot more than a boxer.

Mind you , no boxer is going to look as bad as Olympic gold medal winning Cyclist Bradley Wiggins did on Superstars.

He was the most unfit looking athlete I've ever seen. no co-ordination whatsoever, and the body of an anorexic girl.

I think you're right, most boxers are going to be between fights if they participate, as there is no way a fighter would jeopardise a payday in the ring by going on a stupid TV programme. Hency the Ricky Hatton debacle.

I remember well that edition of Ringside, Boxingmad. Anyone know if the Shepherds had any trouble from the flooding in Carlisle a while back?
