Myths in MMA, Wrestling and Combat Sports

Stories get greatly embellished over time, or people simply flat out lie. But some of these things have taken on a life of their own even when the truth has come out. People still want to hold on to the myth rather than the reality.

A great example of this is the often told story of how "Rowdy" Roddy Piper got into a fight with Kevin Nash at WCW. Piper claimed he won, while Nash claimed he bitch slapped Piper and made him stand down.

But years and years later after Piper's death Eric Bischoff told Conrad Thompson on his podcast that NOTHING happened. Just a bunch of cussing. No punches, no kicks, etc.

One of the biggest myths out there, however, is how allegedly Steven Seagal was choked out by Gene LeBell and made him either piss or shit himself. To this day people like Joe Rogan continue to retell this story--- and even Gene LeBell has told the story in the same manner.

Seagal has also told the story a few times, but has denied ever being choked out, etc. But since he is one of the most disliked people in Hollywood and the martial arts industry most people never quite believed his version of the story.

The true story of this mythic event that has taken on a life of its own is pretty mundane as stunt/fight coordinator Steven Lambert tells the truth of what went down, since he was one of the very few people who was even there to witness the whole thing.

some people believe MMA is too dangerous a sport because they confuse it with street fighting.

Seagal is now claiming that Lebell doesn't even have a black belt in judo. It's an absurd claim and makes me wonder if Lebell really did choke him out.
