Josh Warrington and Maxi Hughes box last-minute exhibition to save local show in Leeds after four fights are cancelled at weigh-in

Josh Warrington and Maxi Hughes gloved up for an exhibition fight on Saturday night to save a local show in Leeds.

Steve Wood’s VIP Boxing card was plunged into jeopardy when four fights were cancelled after the weigh-in on Friday.

However, at late notice, two local heroes stepped in.

Former IBF featherweight world champion Warrington and former British lightweight champion Hughes agreed to meet in a four-round exhibition.

The pair, who train together, traded blows and entertained the crowd.

Warrington explained: “So last night myself and Maxi Hughes had our first (and possibly last) exhibition fight.

“With four fights falling off after Friday’s weigh-in, we both got a phone call soon after and it was a yes straight away.

“Sporting the dad bods, it was more of helping the show continue than anything else, including two lads who were making their debut!

“Hope everyone enjoyed the night! PS. I got a lovely shiner for my troubles.”

Hughes said: “The most important thing for us was the show was able to still go on and the local fighters could continue their careers, including two debutants.”

Promoter Steve Wood added: “Had a nightmare with a few fights on the Royal Armouries show in Leeds tomorrow, but big thanks to Josh Warrington and Maxi Hughes who jumped in to help.”

Fair play to both lads. Didnt have to do it but cause they did a show went ahead and local lads got their fights and debuts in the pro game.

The results of the fights which did happen still haven't been updated on Boxrec. Presumably the matchmaking was that bad they don't want you to know.

Boxrec or one of the record updaters do it.Usually they get the results from boxing news or the bbbofc or sometimes a trusted reporter.

Thanks Jon, I was sure promoters couldn't update their own results, amazing how people outside the industry can get things so wrong. Wish you a speedy recovery after your recent hospital visit.
