Oh so it’s not even going to be online stream ppv? Seems a lot of work to make a channel when your an online streaming Servis.

Might aswell just make DAZN a TV channel aswell

Wonder what happened to the free to air channel Hearn was gonna use to promote the fights.

Without that DAZN PPV is worthless too.

At least BT PPV have BT Sports and SBO have all of Sky channels to promote.

They editorialise it that certain fights can’t get made without PPV. I think that makes sense when you’re talking AJ/Usyk or Fury/Whyte and I’d be fine to pay ppv for those.

The issue for me will be if the level of a PPV show decreases to a Whyte/Wallin or something similar as then it’s exactly the same model as Sky. They’ve said that won’t be the case so hopefully that’s correct.

It doesn’t cost much to request a channel license but they’ll have to buy the TV slot from someone which can be expensive - particularly if they want it on freeview. Will Sky be happy to sell them one?

I can’t understand what the long term strategy is for DAZN, especially with this supposed attempt to buy BT.

I don’t care what fight they put on, I for one will not be risking paying for a PPV fight on an internet stream. Despite having a high speed, my picture quality watching DAZN is nowhere near that of Sky/BT.

I really think DAZN overestimate just how popular boxing is in this country ATM.

I think there is less than 100k hardcore UK boxing fans, probably another 200k who follow it loosely. who are willing to pay subs for Syky or BT.. A lot more hardcore fans would probably stream illegally, if they feel it's not value for money.

As I said before though, most people that watch(ed) boxing on Sky or BT don't subscribe to them channels for the boxing do they?

I’ve no idea but I’d be surprised if it’s 100k at the moment. I only know a couple of people who subscribe and they did so for the Billy Joe/Canelo fight.

It’s not just the U.K. they care about though - it’ll be worldwide viewers - particularly in those countries that don’t have any other sports in their package - as it all offsets the cost of putting on the shows. There’ll be pockets of subscribers in certain countries with 10,000+ people paying for DAZN where they’re just getting access to the U.K., US, Mexican, Italy, Spain boxing shows.

Eddie will argue he’s making people world wide stars whilst in reality it will be tough to build stars in the U.K. just using the app. The fighters may become more well known worldwide but that doesn’t mean they’ll be able to sell 10,000 tickets in Sydney.

To be fair though, they’ve basically always said certain fights will have to be PPV. Imagine they somehow got Fury - Joshua and stuck it on the £7.99 channel. Would just never happen. As long as they keep it to actual mega fights, fair enough in my book.

Winners of both DAZN PPV

If the winners are Fury and Usyk, Paul v Tom Fury would be chief support.

If it's Fury v Joshua it wouldn't be.

The money DAZN are losing on boxing is a drop in the ocean compared to the money they’ve lost on other sports in other countries. I always find it a crazy strategy but there’s been a big rise in companies that lose a load of money but are actually worth huge money despite consistent losses.

They have to pay over the odds for fights/fighters due to the lack of exposure the fighters/platform is getting.

And they’re worth $75bn. It’s crazy that a consistently loss making company is worth so much but that’s the world we live in now.

But you have to turn profit at some point or have assets, or keep growing revenue at rapid pace.

As I've said elsewhere, DAZN's strategy has pivoted at least twice since COVID.

In the UK, it became about Sports betting, and probably just at the worst possible time given the increased legislation.
