Report: Pulev vs. Dos Santos, Belfort vs. Dawson in Play For February Triller Card

Former UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos has apparently signed a deal with Triller and is going to debut for the company in early 2022, according to a report by TMZ Sports.

TMZ indicates that this debut will likely come on a date in February, against heavyweight contender Kubrat Pulev.

Their bout will be held under the rules of Triller's new Triad Combat fighting system - which matches MMA fighters against boxers under a set of rules intended to “level the playing field.”

Pulev is no stranger to the Triller's Triad Combat system.

He recently made his debut for Triller - and demolished another former UFC fighter, Frank Mir, in one round.

Dos Santos (21-9 in MMA) was released by the UFC after suffering four straight defeats. In his last fight with the company, he suffered a TKO loss to at UFC 256 in December of 2020, at the hands of Ciryl Gane

A few months ago, the 37-year-old Dos Santos expressed his desire to enter the sport of boxing - and last month he took a big step in that direction by signing a contract with S-Jam Boxing, which is a management company that guides the careers of boxers such as Joe Joyce, Lerrone Richards, Johnny Fisher, Guido Vianello, and others.

Also on this card, two former champions will collide in another boxer vs. MMA clash.

TMZ reports that former light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson, 39-years-old, will collide with 44-year-old former UFC champion Vitor Belfort, who earlier this year blew away Evander Holyfield in a single round.

Dawson (36-5, 19 KOs), inactive for the last two years, is a lot younger than the 59-year-old Holyfield, who entered the ring after 10 years of inactivity.

Pulev gotta whoop another MMA guy, whose chin has been gone long ago. In contrast to Mir, Dos Santos has striking background and he was good particularly in boxing by MMA standards, but no way he would have ever won a top pro-boxer, leave alone current times.

At lest there's a place for these washed up, passed their sell by dates to go an earn a few dollars.

The only way the MMA guy stands a chances if he clenches throughout the entire thing and does dirty boxing tactics. Otherwise the moment Pulev lands the MMA guy is going to be knocked all over the place. The power difference between MMA guys and boxers is pretty insane as well as punch resistance.

JDS of a 5+ years ago Vs a current Pulev would be the only way this would be competitive as JDS would have a solid chin and some power but even then Pulev would highly likely win by decision rather than getting knocked out. I can't wait for these crossovers to end. In fact, I would more enjoy the top-striking MMA guys against mid-level boxers or the top boxers give MMA a go rather than the non-boxing MMA guys or the way past it MMA guys in one-sided boxing fights.

Just a money grab from Pulev. I don't blame him he is up in age and he is not going to get another shot at the belt. But it might be time to remove him from the ratings

Dawson is a three-time former light heavyweight boxing champion who last fought in 2019. Belfort scored a first-round knockout over 58-year-old boxing legend Evander Holyfield last September.

Former WBO heavyweight boxing champion Shannon ‘Let’s Go Champ’ Briggs will be the boxing team captain and former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson will head the MMA squad.

Triad Combat takes place in a triangular ring over two-minute rounds featuring professional boxers competing against professional mixed martial arts fighters using MMA gloves.

Junior Dos Santos Confident of Beating Pulev: I Think The Rules Favor Me

Former UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos is preparing for his debut in the sport of boxing.

That debut will be easy, as he faces highly experienced heavyweight veteran Kubrat Pulev - in the main event of Triller's upcoming event on February 26, in Houston Texas.

Dos Santos vs. Pulev will take place in Triller's Triad Combat’s triangular ring.

The rules combine boxing with a limited amount of MMA moves - but takedowns, submissions, elbows and kicks are not allowed.

Dos Santos was stopped in his last four fights with the UFC.

But, he's up against a very dangerous opponent in Pulev (28-2, 14 KOs) - who suffered his two career defeats to world-class champions Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko.

Back in November, Pulev made his debut in Triller - under their Triad Combat rules - and blew away former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir in the first round.

Dos Santos is not discouraged - explaining that styles, and rules, make fights.

“It’s a great opportunity. I’ve done some self-reflecting and I really miss fighting.” Junior told Ag Fight. “Living this period of preparation again is very exciting. I’m very motivated. Pulev is very experienced. He has fought big names in boxing, a really tough guy. He’s the kind of challenge that’ll get anyone going. I’m not going out there do a pointless fight with no career aspirations. My goal at 37 years of age is to accomplish great things. Greater than what I’ve already accomplished.

“I think the rules will help me make a perfect transition into boxing. If there ever was an opportunity for me to test myself in boxing, that’s it. This is the time. The promotion is giving boxing guys a chance do a little MMA and MMA guys to do a little boxing. It’s the perfect mix.

“I think the rules favor me when it comes to grappling. But I’m not there to grapple, you know that. I’m there to box. I want to let my hands fly, that’s what I do best. Always looking for the knockout.”

Triad Combat 2 takes place at Toyota Center in Houston, TX on Saturday, February 26. The fight card features a series of bouts between boxers and MMA fighters, with Kubrat Pulev and Junior Dos Santos squaring off in the headliner of the show. The co-main event pits Chad Dawson and Vitor Belfort.

The rules incorporate boxing and MMA. The fighters battle it out in a specially designed triangular ring over two-minute rounds wearing crossover gloves and with holding allowed.

Jason Aldean has been announced as the Triad Combat 2 musical guest. Country Music Superstar is set to kick the night off with two songs followed by the fights, with a full concert closing the night out.

Kubrat Pulev (28-2, 14 KOs) of Bulgaria headlined the inaugural Triad Combat event last November when he stopped Frank Mir in the first round. Battling it out on February 26 he faces former UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos (21-9, 15 KOs) of Brazil. The pair meets in the scheduled for nine rounds bout at heavyweight.

Representative of the country-host Chad Dawson (36-5, 19 KOs, 2 NC) is a former light heavyweight champion. Vitor Belfort (26-14, 18 KOs, 1 NC) is a former UFC light heavyweight champion. The pair meets in a seven-rounder at cruiserweight.

Triad Combat 2 fight card also features Samuel Teah up against Jimmie Rivera, Armin Mrkanovic faceoff Joe Schilling, and Dakota Linger versus Sam Sicilia. In addition, Stephanie Han faces Claudia Zamora, and Martin Allison takes on Mo Zwolak.
