Sergio Martinez vs. Macaulay McGowan on January 27 in Madrid

Popular Argentinian Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez (54-3-2, 30 KO’s), a former two division world champion, is set to battle Briton contender Macaulay McGowan (14-2-1, 3 KO’s) on Thursday, January 27, at the Wizink Center in Madrid, Espana.

The ten round middleweight fight is the fourth bout that the veteran wages since his return to boxing action in August of last year.

Martinez has a set goal of hunting down a shot at the middleweight world crown.

Born in Avellaneda, Buenos Aires, Argentina, Martinez claimed world championships in two weight classes, including the WBC super welterweight strap from 2009 to 2010; and the unified WBC, WBO and lineal middleweight titles between 2010 and 2014; and in 2010, Martinez received “Fighter of the Year” awards from Ring Magazine and the Boxing Writers Association of America.

Will the now 46-year-old Martinez get the title shot he is eagerly pursuing?

The current world champions are Jermall Charlo (32-0, 22 KO’s), (WBA regular) Erislandy Lara (28-3-3, 16 KO’s), Demetrius Andrade (31-0, 19 KO’s), (WBA super) Ryota Murata (16-2, 13 KOs) and “Triple G” Gennadiy Golovkin (41-1-1, 36 KO’s).

At his advanced age, Martinez would have a tall mountain to climb in beating any of the current beltholders.

you never know, the usual assumption is that someone is skint, but i think a lot of these guys just find it hard to let go of the sport. they spent so long in it, were celebrated and a star in it, with all the attention on them. it can be hard to give up something thats such a big part of you

for the oldies, i like those exhibitions they do in mexico. they wear headgear and its mostly good fun. a way to keep the guys in the ring

I can only presume part of it is to help sell the cards that he's promoting.

The other half is perhaps the reasons mentioned above. It reminds me of what Roy Jones Jr was doing some years back, still winning at an okay level well into his 40's, but miles away from the level he was at in his prime.
Some Maccarinelli equivalent will likely chin Sergio if this continues aswell, but he'll probably be able to stretch another few wins at this level first.

To be honest it's the only way.
If you spend time in the gym and are in half decent shape you will fight.

Knockdowns in rd7 and rd10

I hope Sergio calls it a day - he was a great champion. One of my favourites in the last 20 years, but seeing him take shots against Brian Rose - yes, he put in a commendable showing FOR HIS AGE was still sad. The 2021 version of Brain Rose wouldn't have lasted 2 rounds vs a prime Martinez - the fact it was competitive was a bit sad, for his age though he did well.

I thought McGowan would have been more competitive in this given Martinez's age.
