He’s signed a pro deal with Matchroom.

I think he’s got a good pro style but wasn’t really one of the stand out British Olympians.

He’ll be fighting at Cruiser so I guess it makes sense signing with Matchroom as it could lead to some good crossroads fights in a few years.

Matchroom haven't bothered with the Olympians. I bet they would if they were Londoners or Mancs.

I think they’ve probably gone for all/most of them - certainly the McCormacks who could have been built well in Newcastle.

Clarke and potentially McGrail aren’t a bad start but I would have thought they’d be going heavy for Whittaker and Yafai to start pushing in Birmingham (always a tough market) but so will everyone I guess.

look at macklin not sayng he aint got big irish roots but they never played on him being from brum

I remember Macklin being interviewed when he turned pro and he had a proper Brummie accent, a few years down the line he had a thick Irish accent, nowadays it's quite neutral

I’m sure he did try for them - it’s a competitive market at the moment and there couldn’t really be a better time to turn pro as a top amateur.

Birmingham could be a big market - particularly with Whittaker. He’s charismatic and if he turns over and is blasting people out (would need a change from his amateur style) then it could get the fans behind him. Khan sold well there (I know he’d sell well anywhere) so it shows people are up for it - just needs the right person to get it going I think.

I wonder whether FW is going after any of them - Heaney’s been selling tickets well for him already in Birmingham (albeit they’re mostly stokies).

Birmingham is massively Asian, Khan will always sell in those cities.

Surely the three everyone wanted / wants are Clarke, Whittaker & Yafai? They’ve certainly got the biggest profiles. It’ll be interest to see where Whittaker & Yafai end up. If Sky can get all three that’s massive for them.

It was a long way from being a predominantly Asian crowd though. It was a proper mixed bag there - more women than you’d normally get a boxing event too it seemed.

whats with all the jerking over whittaker, do ppl think he's the best or does he have some fame that i dont know about. hes often depicted as the #1 guy to sign. hes good for sure but just looking at the dudes on the team in general i didnt get some really lucrative vibe about him. not sure got the most fun to watch style either

galal yafai 30 this year btw, that's some age to be turning pro at fly! he'll surely be moved at light speed if he turns over

Local derbies are different. The Yafias have never sold there. As said, Galal is 30. He was brilliant in the Olympics but that's some age for that weight. Clarke isn't from a million miles away from there, yet Eddie still didn't sign him.... You just know Newcastle will sell, Laws, Ritson, Marshall, Dickinson, McCormack's. ..

that's not necessarily true unless a fighter is rubbing it in a direct rival teams face , i use to watch darren barker and groves a lot and they're die hard chelsea fans and i'm a spurs fan , i'm sure man utd fans didn't hate hatton

I think it’s because he comes across fairly charismatic. He was mayor for the day in Wolverhampton and had a good chunk of local press.

It won’t matter if his style is negative but if he starts his career with some really exciting performances then I could see support really getting behind him. It also helps him not supporting blues or Villa to alienate a good chunk of fans. Most people are indifferent to Wolves.

Yeah - that’d be true for most rational people. Unfortunately not everyone is rational.

Macklin was never promoted in Birmingham. He’d already lost of a couple of fights by the time he had his first fight there. Fought mostly in Manchester from memory. I think he fought Facey as the headline on a Fight Skool show and even that was in London.

I thought the way Brook was promoted when he first joined Matchroom was good. Start small and then build. Not many promoters want to do the ‘start small’ part of that now as they’re just interested in arena shows.

No its the Mccormacks. Pat Mccormack was clear p4p number 1 for Uk in the amateurs.

Peter McGrail is a serious talent too who medalled in every major tournament apart from the Olympics. Surprisex hes not announced a deal yet either, I know his first 2 fights have been with matchroom but hes not signed with them yet

Mccormacks said probellum made an offer they couldnt turn down. So must be about money.

I really thought theyd have gone with eddie or sky and been pushed properlym .I thinks its a bad move going to probellum for their profile
